I have been waiting months to share this announcement. It seemed like it was just a matter of time, but the wait has still been torturous. Thankfully, today’s the day when the seemingly impossible has been achieved. We have a new best-selling Mega Man game.

Capcom has updated their million sellers list, and it reveals that Mega Man 11 is now the best-selling Mega Man game of all-time. The previous record-holder was Mega Man 2, which released all the way back in 1988. Despite all the Mega Man games that followed, not a single one could crack the 1.51 million units sold that Mega Man 2 achieved. Decades later, Mega Man 11 is now the king of the hill with 1.6 million units sold.

It’s so fantastic to see Mega Man 11 pulling in a franchise-wide victory. Hopefully this shows Capcom that Blue Bomber fans are eager for more classic action. Let’s cross our fingers for a new game reveal during Mega Man’s 35th anniversary, which takes place Dec. 17th, 2022.

Thanks to Olivia for the heads up!

I thought Mega Man 11 had poor numbers due to it being overpriced, but the game seemed to be saved by the pandemic. However Mega Man X Dive flopped on mobile/Steam which is maybe why Capcom sees no need for Mega Man 12, Mega Man X9, or any other new Mega Man game in favor of rereleasing older Mega Man titles again.

What I get from this is that Megaman games sold less than I expected. I'm playing through Megaman 11 and I'm enjoying a lot, maybe in some years we get a new game.

Jeez, Mega Man has struggled to grow in sales. Like when you consider that Mega Man 2 released almost 35 years ago and was $60. By contrast Mega Man 11 is €30, is freely available digitally and right now is on sale on the Switch eShop for just under €10.

Compare that to other franchises like Mario Kart, and how it's grown over the years financially and gameplay wise. Forget even big franchises like that, there are countless debut Indie games that have cracked at least 1.6 million in sales. Maybe it's a series that just doesn't get the sales it deserves like Metroid.

I can bet the Mega Man Legends 3 cancellation debacle is still biting the franchise. Congrats at giving Mega Man the Firefly Effect*, Capcom.

* This is when people ignore a work fearing executives will screw it over. And boy how Capcom has badly managed Mega Man in that it's no longer a triple-A franchise.
