Yesterday, Nintendo hosted a Nintendo Direct for the upcoming Super Mario Bros. animated film. We got to check out a new trailer for the movie, but have you seen the Japanese version? You can give that a watch above, and then read on below for details on who’s lending their voices to Nintendo’s iconic characters.

At first, you might not think you’ll know any of the voice actors in the Japanese version of the Super Mario Bros. movie, but you’d be wrong. Well, you’d be wrong if you’re familiar with anime, that is! If you’ve been watching subbed anime, you might be surprised with just how many of this movie’s actors have appeared in some of your favorite anime. The list of actors you might recognize is as follows.

  • Mario: Mamoru Miyano (Light from Death Note, Ryuji from Persona 5)
  • Peach: Arisa Shida (Amanda from Little Witch Academia, Thor from Wise Man’s Grandchild)
  • Luigi: Tasuku Hatanaka (Yuma from Yu-Gi-Oh Zexal, Gorou from Genshin Impact)
  • Bowser: Kenta Miyake (Scar from Fullmetal Alchemist, All Might from My Hero Academia)
  • Toad: Tomokazu Seki (Kougami from Psycho-Pass, Kanji from Persona 4)

Thanks for a great subtitle, RMC.

The Japanese cast doesn't sound any more "right" than the English-speaking cast, but for some reason they sound more fun. Maybe because Japan hired voice actors instead of movie stars. Or maybe hearing it in another language covers any problems and distractions.

Love that Death Note reference!

Good that others have an opportunity to get paid to voice Mario; but, at this rate, nothing beats the original. Not even close.
