Game Freak's Masao Taya mourns the impending loss of the 3DS eShop
"I think the closure of e-shops is unavoidable."
More than a decade after its launch, the 3DS eShop will officially be closing down at the end of March 2023. This is a loss for consumers who will no longer have access to many of the shop’s games, but of course it’s a loss for developers as well. In a new interview with Game Freak’s Masao Taya, he discusses the closure and how it affected their decision to port Pocket Card Jockey to Apple Arcade.
“The games industry is a fiercely competitive space that has continued to develop from its inception to the present day. So when you consider that businesses have to keep offering larger numbers of releases in order to offer users newer and more stimulating games, I think the closure of e-shops is unavoidable. With that said, the 3DS eShop was where the original Pocket Card Jockey was sold, and it had a lot of other interesting games, so I personally feel sad at its loss.”
Obviously, it hurts developers to lose a potential source of revenue, but it sounds like Taya is moreso sad about the impact of the eShop’s closure overall. There are still many games listed on it that haven’t been made available elsewhere, and could be hard to get access to for quite a while in a couple of months.

I agree.. I still play on my 3DS quite often. Lately I'm trying to solve my very complex Pushmo puzzle again. I was already busting my brains out for two evenings when I realised I had 3D switched off. So I put it back on and BAAAM! I was looking at my puzzle in another dimension ^-^ That was still so awesome, it was completely new again even when I was used to having it on all the time.
Why are we stopping support for 3DS systems when it is still so awesome, while there are more then 75 million devices out there? Create a cool new game for it instead and put it in the eShop so we have yet another reason to dust them off again. I think it is a great device to go back to every now and then.
Switch eShop will be shut down in no time and 1 to 2 hundred million devices are going to be neglected. But why not do things different? The sell new device by shutting down old device is getting old. Look at the phones business, it is just getting old.. Bring back some support for ancient systems instead, allow new things to come to them as well.
