Nowadays, when a game has a glitch, the game developer can get to work on a patch that’ll fix things up. Back in the day, the only way to take care of glitches was to release a new physical version of the game. That led to all sorts of games where glitches, bugs and more were unavoidable.

Some people love to torture themselves by finding glitches in these old games, and one has just been discovered for Super Mario Sunshine. Even stranger, this bug appears to only be present in the Italian version of the game. Worst of all, this glitch has survived from the GameCube days all the way up to the Switch release found in Super Mario 3D All-Stars!

Usually you have to go through a very specific set of inputs to cause a glitch to crop up, but that’s not the case here. In the Italian version of Super Mario Sunshine, all you have to do is read a sign in Gelato Beach to make the game softlock. How such a straightforward glitch has managed to survive all these years is beyond us, but now that word is spreading, we’re thinking Nintendo will squash it in the near future.

Thanks to cm30 for the heads up!

Reminds me of a soft lock glitch in Bug Fables when using the tattle feature on one NPC.
