Nick Offerman is currently getting all sorts of praise and recognition for his portrayal of Bill in The Last of Us on HBO. This means Offerman is making the late-night talk show rounds, and he stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live to chat about the show, as well as his history with videogames.

Offerman hasn’t played The Last of Us, and it doesn’t seem like he will. Turns out Offerman did play games in his past, but he decided to swear off of them after he became completely enraptured with Banjo-Kazooie.

“25 years ago I played my last video game and I’m very indulgent. I lost a couple of weeks to a video game called Banjo-Kazooie. Two weeks went by and I was like, “oh my God,” the slow dopamine drip is so delicious. Then it’s over, and you’re like “yes, I won,” and immediately I’m like, “what have I done with my life?” And so I decided I’m never going to do that again, and so thankfully, because games have gotten so good like The Last of Us, that I think I’d be in a basement and I wouldn’t even be going to auditions for shows like this.”

I guess if you have an uber-addictive personality, anything can get in the way of work and other activities. For Offerman, it was his time with Banjo-Kazooie. It’s just a shame he’s sworn off games and never gave finding a balance a shot. I’m guessing he’d be quite tickled by The Last of Us if he played it!

Not sure how to feel about that basement remark to be honest...

I don't think he intended it to insult anyone. He was just speaking about his own experience.

As someone who played through Banjo-Kazooie back 1998, I can confirm how addicting it was to be immersed in that world.

I played through most of the game on a tiny 14 inch tube TV during my family vacation. The screen had this pink bar that would scroll up every ten seconds and slightly distorted the picture. The game was very difficult to put down though so I just got used to the subpar TV.

Anyways, I hope he at least did that Nick Offerman giggle if he saw that Banjo & Kazooie made it into Smash Bros.

Oh no, I get that. I just think that could've been worded better :)

I agree it was great. The level design was better than SM64 and the fact it didn’t pull you out of the level each time you got a Jiggy encouraged you to keep playing as you notice something else shiny.

Imagine playing games and STILL having a job. I know: Ridiculous, right?
