The Professor Layton series has been going strong since its initial release on the Nintendo DS in 2007. With numerous sequels, each game has introduced a series of colorful characters and creative mysteries for players to puzzle through. They’ve even inspired spinoffs and crossovers such as Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.

Just how successful have the Professor Layton games been? We now have a specific number to answer that question. According to the official Switch eShop listing for Professor Layton and The New World of Steam (which was announced during the latest Nintendo Direct), the Professor Layton series has “over 18 million units sold worldwide”. 18 million units is certainly nothing to sneeze at! There are only six mainline Layton games, but that number most likely includes side entries as well.

We don’t have a release date for Professor Layton and The New World of Steam yet, but if it sells as well as its predecessors, we should be in for more Professor Layton for years to come. Stay tuned!

About time a new Professor Layton game showed up! Wonder if it takes place between or after the events of the first trilogy.

I'm really glad to see Layton coming back, I love the franchise but I never managed to play the crossover (it never gets a sale T_T) or the last one with his Daughter
