Konami developed and published this GameBoy spinoff title from their popular, spooky action-platformer series. Instead of fighting against the usual pointy-fanged fiend, you actual take control of his son in this comical, parody platformer. This game is actually a rearrangement of a Famicom-only title from 1990 that never made its way to the US until 2019 in an anniversary collection for the classic series.

Fans were finally able to do a barrel roll in this rail shooter developed by Nintendo and Argonaut Software. Even better, you get to do all of this as an anthropomorphic animal with plenty of other furry buddies. The blocky 3D graphics provided by the Super FX chip were revolutionary at the time. The game was good. So good in fact that Nintendo has been basically remaking it for years and the series faces an uncertain future. Sorry, you Krystal freaks.

Nintendo developed and published this N64 platformer sequel featuring everyone’s favorite green dinosaur. Following up on the beloved SNES title, this game faced a hard road living up to expectations. Many critics felt the game was too short and too easy. The pop-up book style looked great though. This game also gave the egg-throwing, fruit-loving, dinosaur a voice for the first time.

The monster taming franchise juggernaut entered its 3rd generation with this pair of titles released for the Game Boy Advance. The biggest addition to these games was the inclusion of double battles which consisted of 2-on-2 fights as opposed to the solo showdowns seen in the series up to that point. The games were well received once again even though some outlets felt the series was becoming too formulaic. That didn’t hurt sales as these games would eventually become the best-selling GBA titles of all time at over 16 million combined units.

Nintendo went all-in on the nautical theme as they released this splendid, seafaring romp for the GameCube starring a now cartoonishly looking green-clad elf boy. You wanted the more realistic looking graphics from the 2001 Space World demo clip? Too bad! You’ll get cel-shading and you’ll like it! Critics and fans were eventually won over as this game is widely considered as one of the best in the series even if the late game fetch quest drags on a bit. Inject that Dragon Roost Island theme into my veins!

MercurySteam cut their teeth on the “search action” genre on the 3DS with this Konami-published title set in the rebooted version of their classic spooky series. This game split the difference between the beloved “search action” GBA and DS games and the rebooted 3D action-adventure game from 2010. There are definitely seeds of what MercurySteam would eventually do with the Metroid series with Samus Returns including the parry attack.

Nintendo entrusted Next Level Games to bring back the Poltergust for this 3DS sequel to the ghost-grabbing GameCube launch title. Fire up Professor E. Gadd’s vacuum cleaner as the scaredy-cat brother throughout 5 different mansions. One of the biggest changes in this follow-up is the mission-based structure in which the player is brought back to E. Gadd after each mission and scored in various categories. This 3DS game had the “2” moniker in Japan, Australia, and Europe but NOT in the US. What the heck, Reggie?

When not waxing poetic about Nintendo you can probably find him in the professional wrestling ring as "Weapon Next" Logan Lynch, working out, or enjoying the Wisconsin outdoors. He's a kid trapped in an adult's body. You may have to grow older, but you don't have to grow up!
