The Legend of Zelda franchise certainly has fans in Japan, but it’s not as popular as it is in other areas of the world. That said, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild certainly did a ton to spark new interest in the series in Japan, and it seems that’s going to bolster its successor as well.

According to tracking through Japanese retailer COMG!, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom officially has surpassed the pre-order mark that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild hit before launch. Even more impressive, there’s another 8 weeks to go before Tears of the Kingdom launches!

If these pre-orders are any indication, it seems like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom could see the franchise’s biggest launch says in Japan to date. We’ll all find out together on May 12th, 2023!

That’s great. Zelda was never huge in Japan but BOTW changed that.

It will be interesting to see how TOTK does overall. On one hand it’s building on the huge momentum and love that BOTW built over the years but on the other hand, BOTW had the benefit of also riding the Switch launch wave.

With the anticipation and larger Switch install base, TOTK is going to do very well. I’d love to see it exceed BOTW’s success.

Edit: OMG only 8 weeks to go. It’s so close!

I'm hoping the Zelda Direct will crush my concerns for the game, right now it's just hard to get excited for it.

Summary - Zelda series has sold more pre-orders for its second game, having approx. 120 million consoles in the world now, versus its first game, (which came out at same time as console launch), and had only 1.5 million consoles pre ordered. I see that this story is only Japan #'s, but it does seem like one of those stats that should be expected. Good for TOTK though. I have mine pre-ordered (thanks Nintendo Game Vouchers!)
