Mario has had a good “run” on mobile devices with Super Mario Run, Mario Kart Tour, and the now defunct Dr. Mario World, but it sounds like mobile devices aren’t going to be his home in the long term. In a new interview with Variety, Mario creator and Nintendo bigwig Shigeru Miyamoto made it clear that home consoles are still the major focus for Nintendo’s mascot.

When asked about Mario’s mobile home, Miyamoto responded, “Mobile apps will not be the primary path of future Mario games”. He then elaborated with some more insight into the thought process behind those mobile titles:

“First and foremost, Nintendo’s core strategy is a hardware and software integrated gaming experience. The intuitiveness of the control is a part of the gaming experience. When we explored the opportunity of making Mario games for the mobile phone — which is a more common, generic device — it was challenging to determine what that game should be. That is why I played the role of director for Super Mario Run, to be able to translate that Nintendo hardware experience into the smart devices.”

Of course, just because mobile devices aren’t going to be Mario’s “primary” home going forward, doesn’t mean we won’t see more of them in the future. Still, this quote should assuage any fears fans may have had that Mario might be making a permanent leap to exclusive phone games any time soon.

Oh, darn!

This news will probably only upset people who own stock in Nintendo but don't truly understand it as a business.
