Would could be the ultimate feather in Mario’s cap (cape?) for his animated debut on the silver screen? How about scoring a record for all animated movies worldwide?

While the Saturday numbers are pretty much in and Sunday has projects, analysts and trackers are now expecting the Super Mario Bros. movie to pull in an absolutely staggering $368 million, which would be enough to give it the best worldwide opening ever for an animated movie. The current record-holder is Frozen 2, which sits at $358 million. Again, this is just a projection at this time, but we’ll know if it’s spot-on in less than 24 hours.

As for the domestic box office, the Super Mario Bros. movie is looking set to land a massive debut as well. If projections are to be believed, the film will pull in $195 million for its 5-day haul, which would make it the second-best debut for an animated movie in the states. The record-holder in this case would be Incredibles 2, which released back in 2018.

Some of the negative reviews ae just stupid. It's a Mario movie based on fucking Mario games aimed at families. Did people seriously expect some kind of modern, political "message"? No, it's a Mario movie based on the Mario "lore" in games. Supposed to be fun. Oh and with lots of Mario stuff/easter eggs. It's easter after all (bad joke, I know. I regret nothing!)!

HAven't watched it yet but damn happy it's breaking records. Will watch the second I have the time =)

I do hear it could have been somewhat longer though. But I wouldn't be surprised if they ahve a sequel in mind.

Just shows how irrelevant and out-of-touch most critics have become.

Irrelevant they are not, sadly, because people still gobble them up! Trends are trends after all. But good to see The Mario Movie kicking ass with just being what it was supposed to be: FUN!
Everyoneone I talk to loves it for what it is apart from being a tad bit short. I'll be watching next!

Seen it yourself BTW?

Unfortunately I haven't seen it yet. I've been at work every day since it came out. I work 12 hour shifts and that doesn't leave me with much free time. Hoping I get to it this week.

I know how adult life works, Rid! Part of it myself. Curious to see your opinion on it.

Well it sure took me a long time but I finally saw the movie and I remembered that you wanted to know my opinion of it.

I loved it more than I thought I would. I pretty much got what I expected from a Mario movie. Apparently I'm supposed to hate Chris Pratt but I thought he did great. Honestly I quickly forgot he was voicing the character. They gave Mario an actual personality and it fit. Cranky Kong was probably the only voice I wasn't crazy about. They definitely changed Peach's personality but I'm ok with it. I always like when she gets in on the action in the games. Unfortunately that came at the expense of Luigi who spent half the movie in a cage. But I guess it wouldn't be a Mario thing without Luigi being in his brother's shadow. Hopefully he'll get more time in the inevitable sequel.

Thank you for the reply. Seems more and more like what I expected. A Mario movie based on the Mario games with a little twist for "the modern audience" but not too much.
Thanks again! =)
