Have you seen the Super Mario Bros. movie? If so, then you know there’s one part of the movie where Mario, Peach and Toad are making their way to meet Donkey Kong. The crew gets picked up in a kart and travels to the Donkey Kong kingdom in an action-packed ride, complete with a licensed song backing the scene.

In the movie, this kart scene is backed by A-ha’s Take on Me. There’s no doubt the song is a great one in general, but some have thought it felt a tad out of place for the action. Turns out those feeling something was a tad off were right, as the original plan was to have a song that riffed on a few different Donkey Kong tunes to create a new medley.

That song, titled “Drivin’ Me Bananas” is included in the official Super Mario Bros. movie soundtrack, and you can hear it in full below.

Of course, hearing this song on the soundtrack made fans extremely curious to see what the scene would feel like if it had the original song in place. Not surprisingly, fans have already made that happen. Obviously, this is using footage that comes from the movie that was acquired in a rather dubious way, so we won’t be showing it here. There’s no doubt the footage will soon be removed, but for now, you can find it on Reddit.

Have not seen the movie yet, but from everything I've heard of the original compositions, it seems like the composer Brian Tyler really knocked it out of the park.

In the music composition you can feel it was more than just a paying gig, there's passion in it, how it references so many familiar melodies but is still its own thing.

I can't see the movie in theatres, but the provided song does sound good. The video at reddit also seems like it would make more sense. I hate pop music in orignal worlds.

Dang, that would have been MUCH better than Take On Me... though I would have preferred they replace ALL pop music with orchestrated Nintendo music.

I wonder what convinced Illumination to drop perfectly appropriate songs like this one in lieu of an 80's song that doesn't even really fit.

I hate pop music in Animated Movies, the negatives outweigh any benefit it could bring.

That's so much better. I hate that they didn't use only Nintendo music. orz

Having seen the movie, and listened to Brian Tyler’s full OST multiple times, I can definitely vouch for that. He composed a great original score that also constantly pays tribute to Koji Kondo and other Nintendo composers’ music, and it does it in a pretty seamless way. That DK track is awesome, and it’s a shame it got replaced. I honestly could’ve done without all the licensed songs, I’d much rather hear more of Brian Tyler’s score/musical references to the games. That was one of my only complaints about the movie though. Overall I loved it!
