I think that for one thing, it's an origin story for Mario. So, he had to cut his teeth, first. Also, I think his defining characteristics that they were going for are his tenacity his commitment to his family and friends, his determination to do good and right the wrongs. I personally think that his characterization was very appropriate and admirable. Also, his "try, try again" attitude makes for a fun parallel to the player that keeps trying until they succeed in the games. That really clicked for me during the obstacle course scene.

I’m just a bit disappointed that, in order to highlight how tough Peach now is, they had to degrade the series’ hero, turning him into a Homer-Simpson-esque character, with his only competence coming from powerups. Completely different from the game.

I do feel like they overdid it with Peach, which not only belittled Mario in the beginning, but robbed her of any real character growth she could have had in the movie.

However, I think Mario's Homer-like phase ended about halfway through the movie, when he started to figure things out. I was relieved to see that he still got the be the hero we were hoping for by the end of the movie.

He's different from the games because he's just a plumber at this point. He doesn't have the experience he does in the games. That's like seeing Michael Jordan the first time he ever set foot on a basketball court and being disappointed that he's not an all-star player.
