After years of speculation and rumors, Square Enix finally brought NieR:Automata to Switch earlier this month as NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition. It’s a port Switch fans are extremely happy to see, and one that seems to be extremely well handled. Today we finally find out what spurred on the port in the first place.

In an interview with Destructoid, NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition producer Yosuke Saito was asked what brought about the idea of a Switch port in the first place. While NieR:Automata was published by Square Enix, it was actually developed by PlatinumGames. That’s why it’s so interesting to learn that another PlatinumGames title led to NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition hitting Switch.

This came about because I wanted something to commemorate the game’s 5th anniversary, and after seeing ASTRAL CHAIN, I began to think that NieR: Automata could be released on the Nintendo Switch as well. I think we’ve managed to port this as an extremely high level reproduction, and hope you’ll play it!

I can see Platinum Games being all over Platinum for the eventual 20th anniversary of their games.
