Retro Studios’ games have been built off of the “Retro Universal Design Engine” - or RUDE for short. In a new video courtesy of the Kiwi Talkz podcast, several former members of the Retro Studios development team discuss exactly what makes that engine so special.

The video features three different engineers who worked on various aspects of the Metroid Prime trilogy. According to them, the RUDE engine is in some respects still more powerful than most modern engines used in games today because of the powerful scripting opportunities it allows. Specifically, it’s useful for Metroid games because of all the interactions that occur between the player and various items and triggers in the environment. Watch the video now, and it should give you a new appreciation for the achievements of the Metroid Prime series!
