Fatal Frame games are scary enough on their own, but a new detail has been shared that’s sure to make them even more hair-raising. According to Fatal Frame: Mask Of The Lunar Eclipse director Makoto Shibata, much of the inspiration for this installment comes from Shibata’s own experiences with the paranormal.

Fatal Frame: Mask Of The Lunar Eclipse takes place on Rougetsu Island, which is home to the Rougetsu Hall Sanatorium. This is where main character Ruka Minazuki will spend most of her time, and she can reach her hand out to aid exploration and uncover secrets. According to Shibata, this mechanic was inspired by the time a ghost reached out and painfully grabbed his own hand.

That’s not the only real-life inspiration you’ll find in Fatal Frame: Mask Of The Lunar Eclipse either. While making your way through the game, you’ll happen upon a female spirit dressed in black. This spirit is based on someone Shibata sees in his dreams, a bandaged dead person in a wheelchair that is covered in maggots.

You can learn a lot more about what Fatal Frame: Mask Of The Lunar Eclipse has to offer and its real-life inspirations in the video above.

Man I’m glad I don’t have those images in my dreams.
