Masahiro Sakurai is back with yet another installment in his game development video series, and today he offers up a feature that fits into the “Planning and Game Design” category.

According to Sakurai, there’s nothing wrong with drawing inspiration from an existing game. After all, that’s how game systems and mechanics come to be refined. That said, Sakurai mentions that there are a few things all developers should keep in mind when creating “similar” games.

There are plenty of games out there that have drawn inspiration from big-name hits to craft their own experience. The games that pay homage while innovating are the ones that find success, while the carbon copies often languish in the bargain bin soon after launch.
