We’re just about a week away from playing Super Monkey Ball: Banana Rumble, the newest entry in the Super Monkey Ball series from SEGA. This is the first fully original Monkey Ball game in quite a while, as well as the first that’s exclusive to the Nintendo Switch.

In a new interview with Siliconera, the game’s director, producer, and designer elaborated on why they chose to design this entry specifically for the Switch. According to them, the choice was made primarily to ensure that online play would be as smooth as possible, as the new online multiplayer modes are a big focus this time around. Here’s the full quote:

“The reason for limiting the game to Nintendo Switch was primarily to provide a stable quality of online competition with 16 players, which is the biggest selling point of this game. As a result of focusing on a single platform, we were able to focus on the implementation and stabilization of online matches over time, and as a result, we were able to reach a level that our users can enjoy.

If we receive support from our users, we believe we can consider expanding platforms in the future, so please support Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble.”

The devs also mention some of the new features that will be available as part of this online mode. Namely, it will feature a chat wheel that players can use to send quick messages and stickers to their fellow players during a game.

Hopefully, the decision to make Banana Rumble a Switch exclusive will pay off in the form of silky smooth online play when it’s released on June 25th, 2024.
