Anyone can tell you that Pokémon’s reach is vast but sometimes it’s surprising to see how far the little monster collector that could has entered the cultural zeitgeist. I doubt anyone back in 1996 would’ve expected for the King of England to make a Pokémon joke during a speech and yet here we are.

As you can see in the above clip, during his speech welcome Emperor of Japan Naruhito, King Charles makes a comparison between his luck with fishing and the iconic Pokémon catchphrase “Gotta Catch ‘em All!”. Even Prince William can’t help but smirk at the random comment.

More than likely this joke was made to acknowledge one of Japan’s biggest cultural exports and how the influence of the series is felt all around the world.
