If you follow the Donkey Kong competitive scene, there’s a very good chance you’ve heard of the game’s infamous kill screen. For those who don’t know, the kill screen crops up when the in-game timer has been run so low that it’s simply impossible to complete a level. Mario will be trotting along, and then for no visible reason on-screen, he’ll lose a life.

This is a bug in the game’s programming, but one that only pops up if you can make it all the way to level 22, which is no easy task. This feat has been achieved numerous times by single players, but up until 2022, it had never been accomplished in a two-player game. That finally changed on May 16th, 2022, when Donkey Kong experts Luke Brynycz and David Lyne pulled off the impossible.

Just getting to level 22 takes a serious amount of time, but if you’re an absolutely dedicated Donkey Kong fan, you can watch the entire two-player kill screen run above. If you just want to see the kill screen itself, you can fast-forward to the 1:51:10 mark.

Obviously, now that a new record has been set, you know others will come along to try and top it. Is there a duo out there willing to try and hit this achievement with a better time? I guess we’ll have to wait and see!
