The neutral special is a fire-ball projectile (Literally!) derived from his iconic fire flower powerup in the Mario series.

The up special is an uppercut derived from Mario's iconic jump pose and brick breaking history, complete with coins!

The old down special was a spinning attack (not a kick but close enough) derived from the spin attack from Super Mario World, would be repurposed as Mario's down arial attack come Brawl.
