Live-action/animated Sonic film due in 2018

A portion of a TWP interview with Hajime Satomi, President and CEO of the Sega Sammy Holdings Inc....

TWP: On the innovation angle, what kind of next-generation concepts are Sega Sammy working on?

HS: Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie scheduled for release in 2018. Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved.

Thanks to Zippo for the heads up!

Oh Sega... why are you so good at making me equal parts excited and terrified?

oh boy...

Spoiler

Whatever they plan to do with this hybrid, for all that is holy, I hope they 1) Don't throw in a token kid companion that will slow the heroes down and distract from the action and excitement, and 2) Not use the tired old, "They left from their world to come to OUR world!" plot/trope.

Literally both have been done do death by Hollywood and in Sonic X.

Oh God I have a feeling it's going to be #2. Sonic will get sucked out of his video game and into our world... with zany hijinx. Ugh. I can just picture it now, showing Sonic and friends trying to adjust with life in New York.

Wasn't that the plot of the Smurfs movie?

It was also the plot of Disney's Enchanted.

Apparently they're rebooting The Smurfs as a solely animated movie so I wouldn't be too concerned with number 2 happening: http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Smurfs-Getting-Reboot-With-One-Major-Change-69270.html

Why half and half? The Werehog short proved that a wholly animated Sonic film can be amazing!

Because it's going to be for the 10th Anniversary of Sonic and Elise XP

The first thing this news made me think of was pairing Sonic with a live human princess. I shuddered!

Well had my attention until I saw "CG live action hybrid" movies like Smurfs, Chipmunks, Garfield, Scooby-Doo, Yogi Bear, Flinstones, etc. prove that when Hollywood tries and make these types of movies they ALWAYS suck! Also not a fan of Sonic interacting with humans not named "Eggman/Robotnik" it was horrible in Sonic X, God awful in Sonic 06, Shadow the hedgehog. It was barely tolerable in both Adventures and Unleashed it just doesn't mix well. I'm glad starting with Generations Sega moved away from humans in Sonic games.

I thought the Flintstones actually did a decent job recapturing the characters and setting of the original cartoon.
