Market research firm claims Switch will sell 5 million units by 2017's end

The following analysis comes from market researcher SuperData Research...

- Switch will sell 5 million units by the year's end
- it will be a slow start for the system

“The biggest challenge for Nintendo is to convince console gamers to purchase the Switch as a second device, as many have already committed to a PlayStation 4 (53.4 million installed base, worldwide) or Xbox One (26 million). Asking $300 for a new console without a bundled game is a comparatively higher barrier to entry for consumers, considering that the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are already discounted and come with a free game."

- Nintendo needs to deliver a strong first and third-party slate of titles to build momentum towards the holiday season

I think that number is going to be way off. For starters, the source only mentions the console as a home console, not a portable one, & if the 3DS has sold nearly 65 million units so far, the Switch can't end up starting off with only 5 million in it's first 10 months.

Yes, the 3DS had a slow start too, but when you see the titles Nintendo has offered, such as Mario Kart 8, Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey, franchises that have proved to sell millions of copies in their previous iterations, 5 million is a laughable projection.

I think 6-8 million is pretty accurate. Those thinking this thing will sell 12+ million in a year are crazy.

I think it has a shot at 10 in the first year if it strikes the right cord with consumers. We shall see. They need to keep momentum strong with E3.

5 Million is pretty low. It has to be 10-30 million.

Seems legit enough to me. The PlayStation 4 managed it in almost 4 years to sell over 50 Million Consoles, the Switch is able to manage 30 Millions alone in 9 months.

Yeah, those Fallout players are very excited for games for children like Mario Odyssey and Splatoon 2 (double sarcasm)

It'll do at least 8-10 million this year easily. A 'slow start' my ass!
