Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sold five million in first week, likely outsold Wii U already

Nikkei has reported that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has sold more than five million copies in its first week on the market. It mostly lines up with what we've been hearing the last couple of days as all regions reported on their individual figures. According to the Japanese newspaper, this includes both physical and digital sales.

A more important piece of information is that Ultimate might have outsold Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. That game has sold 5.35 million units, so it stands to reason that it was outclassed in its second week. Nintendo hasn't confirmed that piece of information, but the situation seems pretty cut and dry.

First of all, it's not a port. And more importantly, it's just a SEQUEL.

I seriously didn't think it would be this huge a hit, but damn happy it is. Great game so far.

It's crazy that a 4 year old port could sell that much. 😏

Yes. A port, of course.

It’s sarcasm don’t worry.

It's hard to tell when dealing with comments from Nintendo fans! They are worse than the Star Wars fandom. XD
(and I'm fully aware of the irony that I'm a Nintendo fan myself)

An upgraded port. It's not as lazy as some of their other Wii U ports. They did far and away the most work on this one.

It should also be pointed out that the 3DS got the game first, that Wii U sales would have been lost to it and that Smash was a combined effort on both Wii U/3DS. It's a little like just talking about Pokemon Go Eevee, but ignoring Pikachu.

you must think Street Fighter Alpha 2 is an upgraded port of Street Fighter II The World Warrior then as they both use the same engine and were made on super similar hardware, yet they aren't

It's a fully fledged new game just like that. It's petty and silly to say it isn't at this point.

Don’t bother wasting your time on the profoundly ignorant.

You're right. It's not worth the argument. A sequel is a sequel.

It's a shame that GoNintendo's community has been spoiled like this. I feel sorry for any site regulars when this guy turned up as he seems to derail everything with his garbage as this is such a great community. They probably didn't even need to revise the rules regarding blocking here until he turned up after getting banned from Nintendolife at long last.

Looks at Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Yeah, that one is an enhanced port. SSBU is not that though. Yes, it reuses the SSB4 engine with tweaks, but it's a completely new game.

If SSBU was a port:
Where are all the missing content from here then?

Sheesh. This is like saying Zelda: Majora's Mask was just an Ocarina of Time port.

I was making fun of the first post. I know smash Ultimate is not a port. It just hard to convey sarcasm over the Internet.

It’s was just a joke.

It's all about the marketing combined with an unparalleled attention to detail and devotion to video game history. Combined, it was a perfect storm.
