NPD Dec. 2018 and full-year 2018 tidbits - Switch the best-selling hardware, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe hits a milestone, and much more

NPD's Mat Piscatella shared a few more statistics on both Dec. 2018 and full-year 2018, and it's once again great news for Nintendo.

- Switch finishes as the year's top hardware platform
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe finishes 2018 as the second best-selling racing game of all time, trailing only Mario Kart Wii
- for the first time since 2009, Nintendo is the highest software revenue generating publisher of the year.
- Switch generated the highest December month hardware dollar sales for a single platform since the Wii in December 2009
- Switch achieved the highest December unit sales for a single platform since December 2010
- Switch ends 2018 as the year's best-selling hardware platform in both units and dollars
- annual unit and dollar sales of Switch are the highest annual total for any hardware platform since the PlayStation 4 in 2015
- Switch Pro Controller was the Dec. 2018's best-selling Accessory in dollar sales
- NES Classic was the best-selling Plug N Play system of December and 2018
- the Switch 32GB Neon Red/Blue Joy Con was the only item to sell more units of hardware in 2018 than the NES Classic
- the PS4 DualShock 4 Black, Switch Pro Controller and the Xbox One S Wireless Controller White were the three best-selling accessories of 2018 in dollar spend

So can we please kill the 3DS now? I'll grab the shotgun

Oh please no, not before Persona Q2 gets a localization at least.

I think Nintendo will continue to support and acknowledge the 3DS for just one more year, until the new mainline Pokemon drops on Switch. Then they will put it to rest.

There's both positives and negatives to draw from these figures. We knew these figures yesterday, but still, most sites ignored them as they weren't official. Actually, the numbers aren't quoted here either, even though I sent them in. It's post midnight here, so I'm going to sleep soon, but they're easily found. Nintendo must be delighted.

Edit:

According to preliminary stats, Nintendo Switch moved 1.77 million systems , making it the bestselling console. Xbox One follows behind at a distant 920,000 units, while PS4 is the last at 797,000 systems.

While those are the likely figures, the goal is to leave them somewhat low-key as they're calculated based on leaks. If you noticed, it's the forums/hobbyist sites reported the era numbers (Nintendosoup, etc.), nobody else did.

Good news, but I wonder if this keeps them on track with their projections for the end of the fiscal year. As I recall, they were quite ambitious.

The NES classic outselling the PS1 Classic gave me a good belly laugh.

Doomed as they say. I'm sure people were saying if it's not an x86 machine it would be dead in the water - yet the truth of the matter is the general public who make up the bulk of the Switch buyers don't really care about what's under the hood, they care more about the convenience and the quality of the games.

Top in both hardware and software! Impressive, Nintendo!
But of course, they're still doomed.
