People my age have very fond memories of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show, complete with its Mario Bros. and Zelda animated features. There were other Mario-related shows to come, as well as the Captain N. series featuring numerous Nintendo-related characters. Now we know that DIC Entertainment originally had other ideas planned, including a really strange one.

An estate sale from a former DIC employee has turned up promo art for Nintendo animated series' that never were, including the Metroid cartoon seen above. Whether it was a mistake or a new direction for the cartoon, DIC had envisioned a Metroid cartoon that turned Samus into a man. We aren't quite sure why the idea never got the greenlight, but we're happy it didn't!

Other promotional art turned up as well, including planned series' for California Games, Castlevania, and Double Dragon. These cartoons never made it out of the pitch phase either, although a different Double Dragon series would eventually see release.
