ARTIST INSIGHT: POKÉMON GO FEST 2019 TRIPTYCH

The Pokémon GO Fest 2019 Triptych took 120 hours to complete and ended up being 13,609 × 250 pixels large—that’s about three and a half 4K televisions! A lot of thought and work went into this huge piece, and for good reason. From Chicago to Dortmund to Yokohama—this global event required a key art piece of massive proportions that lived up to the event’s level of significance. Here’s what the process of creating this incredible piece of art was like.

Select a format that would encompass the significance of the event and present it effectively. The triptych format was chosen because it’s composed of three parts that exist on their own as individual pieces but really come to life when combined into a perfectly seamless scene with a story interwoven throughout. Since we were celebrating our first-ever series of three large-scale live events, we felt like a triptych was the perfect format for the occasion.

Begin compositing the first part: Chicago! This section, featuring Buckingham Fountain, set the tone for the rest of the piece. Everything from perspective to lighting had to be consistent, so it was crucial that the Chicago portion of the triptych could lay a solid foundation to build up the rest of the triptych.

Add in the Pokémon models and meticulously paint and edit them to fit the scene.

Repeat the previous steps while building out the Dortmund and Yokohama pieces.

And here’s the end result! Whether you attended a Pokémon GO Fest or took part in the Global Challenge, we hope you all had an amazing summer of Pokémon GO and enjoy viewing this wonderful piece!

The featured Pokémon, Turtwig, will appear more frequently in the wild and in raids, and you could even encounter a Shiny Turtwig if you’re lucky! TEAM GO ROCKET HAS TURNED PSYDUCK, LARVITAR, AND MORE INTO SHADOW POKÉMON!

Team GO Rocket’s diabolical deeds continue! Professor Willow and the team leaders have been scoping out the discolored PokéStops and have noticed that Team GO Rocket now has the following Shadow Pokémon: Oddish, Gloom, Venonat, Venomoth, Psyduck, Growlithe, Abra, Hitmonchan, Larvitar, and Turtwig.

After more research, the professor has found that Shadow Pokémon can’t learn Community Day exclusive moves—likely due to their unnatural state. Be sure to purify any Shadow Pokémon featured on Community Day before evolving them so you don’t miss out on event-exclusive moves!
