Oh, Sony is not doing well over there, but not because of that. You see, people who complain about censorship are quite vocal, but they are a small part of hardcore players/fans, who are already a small part of the grand total of players. So no, that's not the reason.

The problem is that Sony has greatly westernized itself. HQ moved out of Japan. Leadership is not Japanese (and quite scummy). Exclusive games target at Japanese players is in an all time low and there's even talk that their Japanese studios are at risk of closing. On top of that they release a new system that is gigantic for westerners and a monolith for most Japanese homes, costs a lot, has virtually no Japanese focused games and limited stock allocated to the region.

Also, historically, the PS3 sold less than the PS2 (which is expected given worldwide numbers), but the PS4 sold less than the PS3. And by the looks of it, the PS5 will sell even less than that. And that's what happens when you don't provide what the market wants.

Nintendo has a lock on Japan. They better not ruin it by giving into censorship like how Sony did, I'm fairly confident that's why the company isn't doing well over there now.

YEs and no. I am sure some gamers over there are pissed at Sony for censorship and making the games "non-Japanese" that way. Remember these people are proud as Hell =) Anyway, yeah, Sony seems to have just shifted their marketin to the west and I wouldn't be surprised if games like 13 Sentinels would end up on the Switch and sell like insanely crazy on it (insanely crazy? YEAH).

Also a big diversity of games on Switch is something Nintendo is marketing, and not only in JApan. Ony console to release lewd GAl Gun, has fitness games, horror games, RPGs, friendly for children games...You get it. All tjat on the hybrid platform. They went into a more aggressive marketing route and it's working. Switch is not only for the kiddiez now.

Some gamers will be pissed at Sony because they have nowhere to put their systems as well :P

Heck, I'm pissed at Sony for some scummy strategies and all their lying throughout 2020 to the point that hearing Jim Ryan's voice angers me as much as hearing my president speaking. And that's quite a feat.

Nintendo is doing amazing this gen. They could be better, but I don't think they could be much different from now and still be Nintendo, if you know what I mean.

I wonder what the future holds for some Japanese best sellers. I mean, stuff like Dragon Quest, which sells much better over there. Will DQ XII be Switch exclusive? Or at least made with it in mind? I'd love that since I'm loving XI

I have no idea what "lying" Sony has been up to in 2020, so if you could point in the direction...

Nintendo have done a lot of smart with the Switch (silly sentence, know, but I like it) and one of them is marketing. When I saw the introduction video I instantly saw they shifted focus from only kids and family to everyone (including kids and families, of course). A way more aggressive and a bit "cooler" marketing. Making it a hybrid was obvious, but they way they did was pure gold. And they can just market the "Pro" as a part of the Switch family too.

Don't think DQXII wil be exclusive, but timed exclusive could be a thing. It depends on the sales on each platform, but Squeenix wants to earn most money they can, so doubt even that. But smaller, AA games, sure can be. Some games just sell better on the Switch.

Nintendo's been truly smart with the Switch overall. 100% agreed Smile

I also don't think it will be exclusive, but if it's made with the weaker hardware as the base, we're golden. It's a series that is photorealistic anyways, so it would work.

I'll try to sum up Sony's (Jim Ryan's) lies, BS and scummy actions
When MS announced backwards compatibility - Players don't truly care about backwards compatibility. It's a useless feature (added on the PS5)
When MS announced GamePass - Something like that is not financially feasible and we'd never pursue it (they are looking into it)
When Microsoft announced their games would be cross-gen for the beginning of the current gen - This kills the potential for games to fully and truly make use of better hardware. All of our PS5 games are PS5 exclusive (That was said while most of them were being developed for the PS4 as well)

All of those were said publicly and multiple times while they were either behind or doing the exact same thing.

And lastly. Let's say I have a PS4 and my friend has a PS5. We both pay $60 a year for PS+. But he gets to access more content than I do. What's that exclusive content? PS4 games. Why can't I access it? Because they had nothing better to create value to PS5 so they crap on the heads of the people that have been keeping the company afloat for the past few years.
And if your PS5-owning friend does you a solid and exploits a flaw in their programing and gets you those PS4 games in their PS5, you both may get punished for it. A brilliant show of incompetence from Sony all around.
The cherry on the top? The monthly games PS+ subscribers get? Now there's a PS5 game sometimes... but so far it's only cross-gen games and you only get the PS5 version

If you mean PR talk (which is BS) then they are all guilty. Yes, also Reggie. The PR people are never allowed to talk about details (Doug Bowser last time too). But yeah, Sony did show their arrogance again and that's usually spooky.

Oh and cross-gen will die out fast. They are right o that part and developers have said they want to focus on the new hardware and not waste resources on old, outdated tech. The REVIII devs even said so, but from the leaks it seems Capcom is forcing them to amke a PS4/XO version too. Making games from scratch to use SSD the the power of the PC/PS5/XSX is a developer's dream too. More freedom to create. But the user base of the older consoles is still huge and I guess they ahve to cater to them too.

And BC? It's gonna be fad methinks. My generation will play some older games, but they are lying to themselves if they think they will use BC a lot in year's time. And the younger generations? The teens? Wont give a shit. They want the newest games. I loved me some virtual console on the Wii and I used a good bit but even I got the Wii mostly for the new stuff.

The PR talk every company does. They have to say a lot without committing to anything. But he said a lot, committing to a lot, and talking trash of competitors while doing the same thing. On a good day he deserved a kick in the nuts.

It depends on what you call fast. Horizon Forbidden West will be cross-gen and will likely not make it to 2021. Hogwarts Legacy is cross-gen and has just been delayed to 2022. So it will eventually last about 2 years, which is what Microsoft said all the way back.

I think it varies from person to person. I play a lot of the games from NES and SNES on the NSO. I played a lot of VC on Wii, Wii U and 3DS. I still have my Wii U hooked up to play Wii U and Wii games, and my 3DS and DS are always at my nightstand (I can't leave the house, so they are portable inside a small space hehe). Oh... and my PS3 still sees some action from time to time

He might have even known about things for all we know. But I'm not here to defend a PR guy. Non of them, just looking at different perspecties.

Fast. Fast as in few and fewer AAA games will be cross-plat. It depends, of course, on how well the THIS gen consoles will sell. Rough start. But when devs can ditch old tech and focus on the new good shit tools and publishers can drop old tech since new games don't sell on it cross-gen is dead. Not because I want it to, but because it has to. The entire cross-gen and BC PR talk was to try to keep customers in a very turbulent "jump" to next gen. Even MS is starting to kill it off. For the better. Don't live in the past, lern from it and make a good future...And make REVIII VR compatible, you bastards! Smile

Cute! You know about my consoles by now, but does Peter, aged 13, give a flying fuck about old games? Nope. So the younger gen will and do not give any fakkas. And even oldies like me likes new tech and new games on new consoles.

Video chat was good today BTW. Needed that.

Peter sounds like a little jerk :P
My son is 7 and he plays all kinds of games. Heck, he even played a bit of Super Mario Bros. the other day.

I'm not saying I'd get a PS5 to play only older games, but I have a large library of digital PS3 games stuck to a console because Sony sucks at BC. I understand the PS3 is tough to emulate, but PS1, PS2, PSP and even some Vita games should be easy enough. It's a way to preserve history without the need to hold onto every single piece of hardware, and a way to know that the games you've bought this gen will work in the future. So when you jump to a PS6, it would be a smooth transition. But MS is selling this much better than Sony

Peter is a teenager who likes new experiences... But I'll make peter play some Mario!

But MS is selling this much better than Sony

And? In a couple of years it will be very little used and supported by both.

MS is going on 6 years not only supporting it, but actually improving upon it.
Sony has just recently changed its tune.

How would they drop it in a couple of year? Like drop it mid-generation? I don't see them getting away with it then and by 2027 when the gens change again people will have gotten used to it being a standard and will expect it to continue. That's my view anyway

We'll see when the time comes I guess. But I ampretty sure it will get less support and my above arguments still stand. BC, specially older games, is mostly for nostalgiacs. Anyway, gotta game a bit before need zzzz before work.. Have a great end of the weekend.

I'm slogging through my 4 RPGs hehe. I just hope I can finish Age of Calamity before 3D World comes out hehe

By the way, we live in a world where Nintendo packaged NES games for the GBA and sold for $20 (and sold well). And that is just one of the many, many, MANY instances in which Nintendo made bank reselling the same games, both to a new generation of gamers and to older people buying Super Mario World for the 6th time hehe
And considering that now consoles will likely stick to similar but more potent architectures, it won't be that much of a hassle for the PS6 to run PS5/4 and for the Xbox Upsilon X|S to run everything the Series X|S do.
I just wish Sony had the balls to make the PS legacy work on the PS5. I guess they need to lose some to humble themselves into actually working a bit harder

have a great rest of the weekend, mate Smile

Sure it was nice with the GC support on Wii, Wii on WiiU, DS on 3DS etc. That's a nice bonus. And the Switch Pro will sure play all the Switch games. Also nice, but Peter and Tammy, aged 13, might not care too much about the first Halo, they want the newest Halo! But Billy, aged 40, he wants the first Halo. Oh yeah. And he might stop playing it since it wasn't that good as he remembered.

Nintendo is a bit different. Their games are such classics they can resell them all the time or else they wouldn't.

I think my message has gotten through now Smile

Definitely Smile

I just hope that when Peter and Tammy get older they play some classic games to see how far we've come. Heck, show them a VHS tape and explain the world before streaming services. It must even be classified as a horror story :P

VHS is one thing, but Laserdisc is ritua!

I am pretty certain that Nintendo does censor their stuff..at least when it comes to localizing the games to the west. I'm not sure if Nintendo has censored content in Japan. But its odd that everyone thinks Nintendo isn't censoring stuff and that's not the case.

Really the big problem is Sony moving their HQ to the west that is causing lack of sales for their consoles.

Actually Nintendo has a mix of censorship and localization changes.
For example: being able to choose the breast size of a teenager in Xenoblade Chronicles X is something Japanese culture seems to be okay with. But it's something not okay in the west, so it's a localization change.

So wait..you mean to say that Nintendo throughout Japan has never censored their content in Japan..like at all?

I have a hard time believing this cause Nintendo has been considered a "friendly" buddy for a long time.

That's not really what I said. I said there's a difference between localizing to a different culture and censorship, which is true. Just because I mentioned one instance in which it was not censored there, it was by no means implied and stressed that they've never done it.

In fact, they most certainly have. But that's something you'd have to really look into to find, because when this topic is approached it's usually what's changed once it leaves Japan, not the other way around.

Thinking really hard I believe there were changes made to Resident Evil 4 there, but I'm not even sure which version or whether it was initiated by Nintendo or Capcom. Sorry.
But if you wanna have fun, check game boxes for Japan that are very different from the West. Some are hilarious

No that's removing a feature bro.

Localizing can and often does go hand in hand with censorship. To make something local is to bring in things with a strong cultural difference and "adjusting" them into something more familiar. A good example of this would be how, for a time, black news reporters and team members would "talk more white" in order to make them more appealing for their audience. Regardless of what you may call it, be it censorship or localization, you are trying to hide something from the viewer. I prefer a straight translation, don't try to warp the intent of the original work.

Translation and localization are different btw.

Let me see if I got this right. You want direct translations for everything that moves from one language to another? Have you ever worked in the field? I've been doing it for well over a decade, and that's an amazing way to lose customers and have your text sound fake and lifeless.

Even not accounting for that, certain things such as the way teenagers are portrayed in Japanese media are illegal in other countries. So, in your view those countries should not get that content. Is that correct?

What about food? Certain foods detected in cartoons and anime are something children from other countries have never even seen in their lives, or are used in a completely different manner. So, should that be kept intact so the children can't relate and reduce their interest?
And what about entire cultures that don't eat pork and seafood? Should they just never get to read Harry Potter because Harry has bacon for breakfast? Or could they replace it for an item that is within their culture and beliefs?

A good example of this would be how, for a time, black news reporters and team members would "talk more white"

That's a whole other thing. You're not translation anything. It's not changing to a different language nor country. That's just plain racism. And I'm assuming (correct me if I'm wrong) that it happened in the US.

Wherever it is, I can assure you this. I'm from Brazil, where we have a wild variety of ethnicities mixed all over the country and a great variety of accents. Newspeople, however, despite where they come from and what they look like, all receive vocal training to sound without a distinct accent, as to not favor a specific group of people.

You did not properly read.. or you quickly skimmed my post. The example I gave about black people needing to "localize" themselves is not a translation, it is localization and culturally ignorant. It is the exact same thing as changing certain foods in cartoons and anime because you assume and think for the audience like they aren't capable to experience something different.

Should they just never get to read Harry Potter because Harry has bacon for breakfast? Or could they replace it for an item that is within their culture and beliefs?

This is extremely ignorant and a little self aggrandizing. I can see how you would think that way with how you apparently work in that field but to assume children of a specific culture or belief would not read Harry Potter, (a book that prides itself on taking children to a strange and mind expanding world), because they eat bacon!? It shows how little you really know about the world.

It is the exact same thing as changing certain foods in cartoons and anime because you assume and think for the audience like they aren't capable to experience something different.

Most people aren't aware of what other cultures eat. Heck, if your country is large enough and not ruled by fast-food chains it also happens in country. I'd love to see you explain to a 5-year old what a "coxinha" is. Give it a go now, no Google. And then give it a go with Google. Let's see how well you do.

This is extremely ignorant and a little self aggrandizing. I can see how you would think that

Wow, thanks for the kind words... give me a second to stop blushing here

children of a specific culture or belief would not read Harry Potter, because they eat bacon!? It shows how little you really know about the world.

Yes, because Jews and especially Muslins really play fast a loose with their religious beliefs and never teach their children what they should or shouldn't do. And they are such a small percentage of the world anyway, so why would you care?

It shows how little you really know about the world.

This is an actual change that was made to the books, Mr. Worldwide

They changed the title of the first Harry Potter book to “Sorcerers Stone” in the U.S. from the original “Philosophers Stone”
OMG CeNsOrShiP

Seriously, people who think localisation = censorship need a wake up call. Or just buy the original unlocalised version.

Thanks, mate Smile

I wish I could draw

well to make the art of a Panda warrior dressed as a Mandalorian next to a DeLorean ;)

And that change was within the same language. In France the first book is basically Harry Potter and the school of sorcery or the sorcerers (can't remember which now). In German the second book has a slightly different take on what is in the Chamber.

In Portuguese (both Portugal and Brazil), the first book is a literal translation of Philosopher's Stone, but in Brazil the names of the houses were adapted to our language, while in Portugal they stayed the same.

Yes, I confess. I enjoyed my layover time in airports checking Harry Potter books. Let me get my nerd flag :P

Seriously, people who think localisation = censorship need a wake up call. Or just buy the original unlocalised version.

100% agreed. I do enjoy experiencing things in their original format rather than rely on localization whenever I can. With games I don't mind much because English localization is usually really good. But I never play games in Portuguese, it's such a drop in quality it hurts. And I've never read the last Harry Potter book in Portuguese, because the 6th one was so poorly translated I lost all interest and stuck with the English version

Most people aren't aware of what other cultures eat.

Yeah, so that's a problem why? I guarantee you no kid or adult has ever stopped playing a game because there was some food dress presented that they never seen before... I mean I'm sure you could find one but, whatever. One of my first experiences with Japanese cuisine was in Pokémon Stadium during that Lickitung minigame and personally I would say I was better off for in some small way. I don't need stuff like "Coxinha" explained to me and neither does any kid yet they can still see other people eat it.

And they are such a small percentage of the world anyway, so why would you care?

So if there are characters that are designed to be gay or trans based what the creators had in mind, would you support those aspects be removed or changed in order to better appeal to those societies as well? I'm sure if Christianity stuck to it's roots and never wanted their culture getting exposed from others then everything would work out in the end, right?

Also just because Harry Potter made changes, doesn't suddenly make it right, it only strengthens the ego of people like you. Personally I would rather they keep the name Philosophers Stone instead of Sorcerers. I do recognize there are legal issues to deal with in some cases and I can be understanding in those areas but when we are talking about thinks like culture and sexuality, I see no reason to bend the knee there.

I don't need stuff like "Coxinha" explained to me

AKA I don't know

So if there are characters that are designed to be gay or trans based what the creators had in mind, would you support those aspects be removed or changed in order to better appeal to those societies as well? Homosexuality is a crime in some countries, but I believe none of them are Christian. In fact, in many of them Christianity itself is also a crime. But I'm sure someone as well traveled as yourself is aware of that.

Also just because Harry Potter made changes, doesn't suddenly make it right, it only strengthens the ego of people like you.

Says the person deducing that their vision of things should be the worldwide standard and because I see differently I'm stupid (or whatever insult you used)

I see no reason to bend the knee there.

Good for you. In fact, stand by your principals. It's a capitalist world and money talks. So don't consume ANY product or service that doesn't do anything besides literal translations. I hope you're also a polyglot Smile

Homosexuality is a crime in some countries, but I believe none of them are Christian. In fact, in many of them Christianity itself is also a crime. But I'm sure someone as well traveled as yourself is aware of that.

OK you are clearly not reading properly because for some reason you think I was talking about Christianity.

I'm sure if Christianity stuck to it's roots and never wanted their culture getting exposed from others then everything would work out in the end, right?

Definitely. When you said that it was your autocorrect that changed the words.

Anyway. This was you second chance to apologize for calling me ignorant and yet, no apology.
But why should I expect it, since I was called it when I have over ten years of experience in a field that you have none, but in your eyes you know all and I'm just a third-world bug to be squashed by your ego.

Since you lack proper manner, you will be blocked so I don't have to deal with Your Majesty again.

Vai ver se eu tô na esquina, seu pirralho mal educado.

So great to see Pikmin 3 hanging around the top 10 for so long Smile

The Japanese love portables. I think the dedicated home console market is in serious decline.

While they sure do love their portables, the Switch Lite - the more affordable, portable only option - is down YoY, while the regular Switch is up.

That is to say that the Japanese market is full on board with Nintendo's concept for the Switch (and the whole world to be honest...)

It's almost at 3DS levels of success (not long to surpass it) and it's not absurd to expect it to beat sales of WiiU and 3DS combined

Actually it has already surpassed the 3DS worldwide sales. We just don't have the official numbers for the Holiday season released yet. But considering the YOY growth and the quarter regular sales, the Switch should have sold around 12 million units in the quarter, which would put it at just over 80 million (above the almost 76 million of the 3DS).

And sales have yet to slow down, so the absurd would be to expect it NOT to beat Wii U and 3DS sales combined, which would be around 89 to 90 million. A number it will easily reach before its fifth anniversary

I was being a bit coy there, but absolutely, we will definitely see some great numbers again this year.

The line up is shaping up nicely with:

Feb - Bravely Default + Mario 3DW
Mar - MH Rise
Apr - Pokemon Snap

Let's hope there's lots more coming! I for sure be can't wait for SMTV, NMH3 and hopefully Bayonetta 3 (I don't think there's much chance of Breath of the Wild 2 this year but we could at least get something for the anniversary...)

MH Rise is gonna be huge on the Switch in Japan. You have a point here.

This is seems quite promising indeed.
I don't want Bayonetta 3 to come out because I want to play it, but because a good friend of mine will only buy a Switch to play it (and then Smash and other games).

I believe there's a big chance we'll get BotW2 this year. We're less than two months away from BotW's 4th anniversary. And BotW2 will be reusing the engine and a lot of assets. I wouldn't be surprised if they wanted it to release this past November but COVID got in the way. So my guess is we'll see it around E3 time and get it in November because they will want a huge holiday title this year. And who knows what else they have in store.

And I know it can be pointed out that there's been no gameplay for it. But we don't actually have gameplay for Snap and it comes out in April.
Heck, we don't have gameplay for Horizon Forbidden West or even CG for God of War Ragnarok and both are listed as 2021 releases (though these last two I doubt will make the cut)

I hope we get something cool for the anniversary. A bundle of 3 or more games in a package would be fine by me, because it would be worth the price. If it's just Skyward Sword I wouldn't buy it because games are ridiculously expensive in Brazil

"It's almost at 3DS levels of success (not long to surpass it) and it's not absurd to expect it to beat sales of WiiU and 3DS combined"

And that’s the thing people don't consider. People talk about the Switch surpassing this and that. The Switch should be compared to previous consoles AND handhelds. It should be making up the numbers for both markets.

Well, I'm not privy to Nintendo's strategy so I couldn't tell what kind of numbers it should or shouldn't be doing, but it will most definitely be comparable to previous consoles plus handhelds.

They are not as neatly aligned, but for simplicity's sake let's just pretend they are, the numbers would be as follows:

Wii 101.6
Ds 154.0
Gba 81.5
3ds 76.0
Switch 68.3
Gb 64.4
Nes 61.9
Gbc 54.2
Snes 49.1
N64 32.9
Gcn 21.7
WiiU 13.5

Ds Wii - 255.6
Gb snes - 113.5
Gba Gcn - 103.2
3ds WiiU - 89.5
Gbc n64 - 87.1
Switch 68.3

And as pointed out by the other guy, it should have Already cleared 80M - with at least 3 years, it's not impossible to see it go north of 100M - which would position it nicely along the combined numbers of previous generations

That dude is stuck in his ways and no amount of logic will change that. Nintendo created an in-between, both in terms of power and cost.

But according to his logic, cellphone manufacturers should be comparing their sales with cameras, notepads, spreadsheets, photo albums, CD players, newspapers, magazines, etc...
