Microsoft says they're not competing with Nintendo, Nintendo in their own cycle

I'd say that's very true in some regards, but not so spot-on in others. Even if the Wii U and the next Xbox are completely different spec-wise, they'll both be video game machines. They'll always be competition for one another on a basic level.
