I don't understand why this video has negative votes. It's not offensive, and if it doesn't concern you in any way, why bother voting it down?
No one complained about when fans turned New Super Mario Bros. into Super Mario Bros. 3 or when some fans decided to recreate Super Mario Sunshine levels in Super Mario Galaxy.
This is an awesome idea, and if this is what they want to do, then it's totally fine.
I do remember that in Brawl - and + they added more elements to the stage builder, textures for characters to resemble others and even changing their moveset to make them more believable, modify the stages (check out Mt. Pyre if you're a fan of Pokémon!) and even put a longer limit to record the matches.
Played the first demo of project M and while i thought it was cool to play, I just think the whole idea is a big waste of time. People can't get over the change from melee to brawl so bad that they have to go into the code to change variables around. I cant think of any other fighting games that have gotten people that anal enough to hack into and change the game. With the next Smash Bro's around the corner I really don't see Project M getting any exposure to the point where it will be in all the official tourny's.
Not to mention that it isn't even finished yet and it's already damn fun (and free, and downloadable without actually doing anything to your Wii).
I'm gonna repost part of what I said earlier today with some slight modifications since not many people seem to understand why they're going back to Melee physics:

As much as I don't want to bring this up because it seems overdone, it's pretty much a perfect example of what Egoraptor was talking about when he did the Sequelitis video for Super Castlevania IV and called it an "ungraceful sequel". Sakurai didn't really think about how things like the removal of hit stun and l-canceling as well as slowing everything down would impact how the rest of the game, which was structured similarly to Melee as far as basic gameplay goes (same control scheme, same objective, etc; this is also why a lot of returning characters like Mario, Captain Falcon, and Samus feel like they were considerably nerfed). You aren't given incentive to be offensive, the very point of a brawler, because there's less risk and high reward for being defensive with most characters.

The issue with this logic is that we have no idea how the next game is going to play. Sakurai has acknowledged that there were problems with the balancing, but he's also said that SSB4 probably isn't going to be like Melee.
Not to mention that Melee's competitive scene grew bigger when Brawl released and is still growing today; because the mod is cost-free it has a lot of potential to hit the mainstream.
I seriously don't understand the complaints. These are for those who are interested.
Other games have had fan mods to make a game into something that they'd rather have.
Street Fighter game has a lot of mods! No one's complaining.
WWF No Mercy's been tinkered with over the last decade. People aren't complaining. (I'll still love to have a next-gen No Mercy-like game)
The whole MUGEN universe is so freakin' customizable, that you can create almost any type of 2D fighter that you want! Where the fuck are the complaints!?
The reason why one's complaining is because of a few things:
-Many people (the whiners and complainers) don't know about them
-The whiners and complainers aren't interested and minds their own business
-News for most of those mods aren't posted on big sites, like IGN and GoNintendo.
If you don't like it, ignore it. If you want to make a change, then do something about it. The Project M people did.
It was either wait another generation for Nintendo to create a new game or do something productive with what's already available.
No one HAS to play or get involved with Project M.
That being said, don't knock it 'till you try it. I encourage all of you to at least give it a download and play around with some of the characters that were changed significantly, you won't be disappointed.
Also, as I've said a few times already (and I think the vid mentions it too), it's a free game that works though Brawl's stage builder and not the Wii itself so there's zero risk. When did more replay value become a bad thing?

The same could be said for every time someone complains about people being mad people for saying bad things about Nintendo or when a game someone doesn't like gets posted. And the same reason someone could say to you(generally, not you specifically) for defending these people or not liking a certain game. It's their opinion. If people don't like it, they have the right to say so, just like you have te right to like it...
^The hate here isn't really a matter of a like or dislike of something, though. If someone simply preferred Brawl's gameplay to Melee's because Melee was too fast for them or something, then I respect that.
The difference here is that the hate stems from an irrational hatred of the competitive Smash Bros. community, even though the mod by itself has nothing to do with that. The haters automatically associate P:M with Melee, Melee with competitive, and competitive with bad. They aren't informed about why Project:M happened, and instead complain about how competitive players didn't want to transition to Brawl and learn a new game, despite this not being the case.
The haters are completely unwilling to accept that Brawl had design flaws, and despite P:M being completely free and not required they have the audacity to call it stupid. People have spent years working on this for no money so people could get extra replay value out of a game in a way that they like to play it, while doing some amazing things in the process. This is easily one of the most well-done mods ever created.
Maybe they wouldn't dislike the concept of P:M as much if they actually tried it.

With THAT being said, I also think there is a certain nature to not hampering on things that have no immediate relevance to you. Everyone has the right to say what they will, of course, but the general technique to employ is to remember that if there is something that is just not your thing, it's usually a good idea to just not worry about it either way. Of course now this comes to opinion, but I have a much better time dealing with someone who enjoys things and likes to utilize discussion to enhance excitement for something, rather than a situation where someone is just arguing or trashing for the sake of it. No, I can't stop someone, and I likely wouldn't ever ask them to stop unless it got really ugly, but generally, if I am not into something, meter goes to zero in interest, meaning it does not hold any importance of discussion. Very few things I am terribly heated about when it comes to needing to speak my mind as such (like this, for example), but it's definitely discouraging to come into a comment feed regarding something you're interested in and having a bunch of people who absolutely do not care for whatever is being advertised to start raining on the parade of those that might show interest.
Now, more directly on topic, I downloaded the demo last night and I absolutely love having to re-learn the game again. It's touted as Melee 2.0, but with all of the nuances beyond just the similar physics, it's a blast to take characters and have them changed around so much. I thrive on change though, so it's fun to not simply have Wario with melee-esque movements, but a near fully changed moveset as well.
Kudos to the team who is taking the time to do such remarkable things with the game. I know people tout it as a waste of time, but it's so akin to the modding community on the PC end of things, that why not let the folks doing this project (and those enjoying it) take the time to give something they may believe to be worthwhile? Either way, it's a blast, and I can't wait to get some people over tonight so we can work on fully absorbing all the new stuff.

Then in that vein its being contrarian for the sake of what exactly? A right to opinion?
That's childish to say the least and only breeds irrational hatred towards an optional thing. If they have their right to an opinion then they must surely have free will, right? Why do they constantly torment themselves with something they so obviously hate. It's insanity to do it to oneself and especially more so considering nothing has happened negatively towards the projects growth and it has done nothing but flourish. Yet they insist to hate on any fan mod related to brawl like its akin to slaughtering the innocent en masse.
There's righteous indignation and then there's ignorance.
----------------@DinnerSonic---------------------------------------------
If that isn't their mission statement then you shouldn't hold to it. I interpret that as an assumed fact that some have used to justify hatred and nothing more. Nothing on their site encourages that mindset nor does it support that thinking.
I'm just going to mention real quick that the only thing that majorly turns me off to Project M and the like(maybe I'm mixing this and another project up?) is the whole "Sakurai is a total dumbass hack, we're so much better than the originally developers" mentality that comes from a lot of it, as I've often seen in signatures of the people behind it on some forums. Really soured me to the whole thing, going too far beyond just "let's make it better/faster/different" or "let's make it feel like Melee"... though I've not been downvoting either, I suspect some of them come from similar mindsets.
I played this a bit last night. Pretty interesting. If you liked Melee and hated Brawl, you'll probably like it. If you do play Brawl regularly, you might be put off depending on what character you played and what you liked about that character. I did not like what they did with Game & Watch (no more bucket-braking qq), but really liked the new Mario which gives him back his old Down-B and D-air.
Is this related to some way to brawl -/+
So it's a bunch of people who still can't move past the fact that Brawl doesn't feel exactly like Melee...
I mean if it's well done, great. I just don't really see the point... Though they got rid of tripping. So yay for that, I guess.
@LegendofSantiago
From what I know, they are independent guys that want to make Brawl into Melee. So no, they work for other reasons.
@Shaanyboi
I wonder if they'll move the project once the next game is released...
@led-naruto It's that a lot of those things ARE in brawl -/+ even the small segment of the temple

You clearly haven't been following Project M much then. Not only are a lot of the existing stages modified and new/old ones added (the Castlevania level, the Metal Mario stage, Hyrule Castle, and Saffron City from SSB64), but they're doing stuff like this:
