Analysts talk Nintendo's operating loss, say Mario needs to go to other platforms, discuss Wii U price

"They have been beaten by smartphones and tablets, in particular, for consumers spending and, more importantly, time." - David Gibson, an analyst for Macquarie in Tokyo

- estimating a 45 billion yen deficit
- Nanako Imazu, an analyst for CLSA in Tokyo, says Nintendo will have to sell the Wii U for as much as $350 to break even
- Imazu says Nintendo should get a boost this business term from a weaker yen and the launch of recent popular software
- should result in an operating profit of around 40 billion yen

"Nintendo has to deal with the change and let Mario games be played on non-Nintendo devices. I think it will take at least couple of years to see that." - Nanako Imazu

Mario isn't going ANYWHERE. Not even in a million years...

It's never going to happen, dummy. Deal with it.

Yep nintendo has developed 75 first party titles between wii and wiiware.

While Sony has developed 138 first person titles
And Microsoft has 144 this gen on xbox.

Huh that didn't turn out the wayxi thought.

Two analysts who are confirmed to be biased against Nintendo are saying Nintendo needs to quit, go mobile, and that the Wii U will be a failure?

Am I supposed to take them seriously?

Its interesting, all this aside, you must remember Nintendo IS a publicly traded stock. It is possible for their share holders, (if they so choose) to say "Start producing for mobile devices."

I think this scenario is more possible then a lot of people here would care to think. Not that there is anything wrong with that. But things in the tech sector are changing all the time.

I personally think Nintendo will be releasing full fledge computers in about 10 years.

@shingi70

uhh, actually sony develops sod all, and neither does microsoft, they may have published more games but even then, it's quality over quantity. No one here gives a damn about all the kinect crap that microsoft have published (in the same way no one gives a crap about all the wii series that nintendo have published). Microsoft have published almost nothing worthwhile this gen outside of halo, forza and gears of war, and I have to question whether or not halo is worthwhile in the first place.

sony have admittedly published quite a bit this gen and do hold their own against nintendo, microsoft in this case however, are a complete joke.

It's getting really hard to take any of these guys seriously when Nintendo has been slapping Microsoft and Sony around for the past 7 years.

To survive Nintendo must put their games on other platforms!

Er, that would kill Nintendo instead of saving it. People only buy Nintendo consoles to play Nintendo games, since that's kind-of the purpose of a game console, ya'know to play things on it.

Oh well Nintendo is DOOOOOOOOOOOM-duh!

Wow Pachters stupidity has spread overseas. Does this guy seriously believe Mario will be on other platforms in 3 years? He seems to contradict himself by saying Nintendo will have a 45 billion yen deficit this year, then saying they will have a 40 billion yen profit.
I guess Nintendo really are screwed since they have to sell the WiiU for at least $350, but at the same time selling it for a penny over $250 is going to kill them.

Actually, a lot more developers are saying XBLA is a major pain the ass. The best digital distribution platform is Steam.

Should I have clarifed on consoles xbox live is the best. Ans I Mindanao take the whole xbox live is a pain in the Ass for a grain of sale. Mircosoft is known for being highly developer friendly holding an XNA xbox indie game contest every year and giving away tablets and phones for devs to work with. Not only that's but xbox live has a ton of Ali's avaible to devs that don't exist and would have to self wroteen on psn/wiiware and evenxsteam.

But yeah its no contest stew. Is the best around.

no mario doesn't need to go to other platforms any more then any 1st party game does.
if people want a mario game play in platformer it might not be 100% the same but some platformers on other platforms are as good and sometimes even better then mario games.

The only way I see this working is if they develop a mobile game. It could work as a starter drug for those who've never played anything from Nintendo, or who haven't played anything in a while. If the person likes the game enough and wants more, the next logical choice would be (assuming Nintendo doesn't flood the app store with games, which they shouldn't) to buy a Nintendo console.

But otherwise no it doesn't make financial sense for Nintendo to publish its core franchises on other series. Not only that, I'd imagine it'd cause labor issues, since a lot of the people working there are used to developing only for Nintendo consoles.

Certainly means Nintendo won't fail... and also that Sony will just keep putting more and more money behind the Vita.

Still I wonder if that could eventually spell bankruptcy for Kaz's empire? XD

... why are they so stupid? Mario needs to go to other platforms? Oh yeah cause he hasn't made enough of millions of dollars on Nintendo's systems. And Nintendo is beaten by tablets and cellphones? That's like saying cars are beaten by bikes...
