Reggie on Wii U friend codes, Miiverse monitoring, single-touch GamePad, battery life and more

- final GamePad design features charging port on bottom instead of top
- Battery life: "I have to say that, as a company, we are amazingly conservative when it comes to giving guidance on things like battery life. If you go back to the 3DS discussion on battery life, the numbers we gave before launch vs. the reality of launch were very different. So what I would tell you is that Nintendo is absolutely committed to making sure that the battery life for the Wii U will not get in the way of the gaming experience."
- playing a game on the GamePad instead of TV: " (This is a) capability [that] is there for every game but it's a developer's choice if they want that to be part of the experience."
- this is called Off-Play TV and is a feature that will most likely be tagged on boxes
- Wii U Pro Controller has been in development for quite awhile
- Moderation in the Miiverse: "The way to think about how we will ensure a positive consumer experience with MiiVerse… first, there are parental controls. As a parent you can choose for your child not to have any MiiVerse conversation. You can do it only with friends. You can do it with everyone. The second level is going to be essentially a technology-driven scan to make sure that inappropriate words and inappropriate pictures don't make it onto MiiVerse. The third level is going to be the community that will police and flag items. The fourth level is for a human review at Nintendo."
- if you pass the scan for no bad words, your message can be fast-tracked for posting
- humans step in when messages from a specific user are constantly flagged
- "Once you start getting into game-specific [Achievements] that's developer driven. That is not our philosophy."
- "There are friend codes, but it's not the existing friend code system. What do I mean by that? Here's what I mean: you will be able to identify people as friends and have a certain level of interaction vs. a different level of interaction for the more general population. The method by which you identify someone as a friend is a lot simpler than what's happening today with Friend Codes."
- "The main message we've communicated is that it's got USB ports so you can keep adding storage to your heart's content."
- "It was last year that we talked about a new Smash Bros. that will have some interoperability, some linkage between Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. Obviously [Smash Bros. lead designer] Mr. Sakurai, having just finished Kid Icarus, hasn't made a ton of progress on that game, but that's going to be the one where we talk about how the two systems could work together on one game."
- "When we went through the building of this and, given some of the functionality, we thought that single-touch was a more appropriate option, especially when you've got other button configurations. Certainly there's a cost to it. Again, we envision this as a controller that you're putting in your hands and you're doing a two-screen experience. The concept of putting it in your lap to do multi-touch for us just feels unwieldy."
- "We don't have a policy surrounding used games. We have not put in place any technology to go after the used game business."
- not talking about colors at Wii U launch

That pretty much goes exactly against what they showed off in the "Zombie-killer NSAF guy" skit when the gamer read and then video chatted, instantly on the spot, a complete stranger in Miiverse.

Friend codes are probably only required if you want to add specific people that you have not interacted with inside of a game before. The Miiverse thing probably just pulls information from random people with the same games as you that have similar system language settings.

Say what you will about the conference, but Reggie himself mostly has his head on straight. Lots of good answers here.

The fried code comment is really vague and confusing though. Though honestly, friend codes have never gotten in the way of me enjoying my 3DS, so if it's less intrusive than that, I won't complain too much.

They are SYSTEM-LEVEL achievements. I'm not sure if that is what you meant or not but there will be an achievement system in place from Nintendo on the system level like with streetpass mii plaza but there will be no requirement of achievements like on Xbox and PS3. If the developers choose to implement achievements, they can, but they don't have to.

Yes, that is what I mean, RMC didnt include that bit up there.

I'm glad about the monitoring system.

nothing on region coding? although i expect its locked like 3ds

i do wish they'd remove region locking!!!

Why the hell are they being to cryptic about the friend codes? It makes me worried that they're just all like, "They're friend codes, but not really" instead of "Friend codes are gone."

Well the first thing I'll do when I get a Wii U eventually will be to change it to "friends only"

But how else are they suppose to make Australia pay more for things!

Having this sort of clarity from Reggie is refreshing.
I can rest a bit easier now knowing we won't have such strong restrictions any more

fail interview is fail. where are the follow up questions like "are you serious? friend codes are fucking stupid." and "are you going to police messages between friends?"

ffs, reggie was actually answering questions and they still lobbed up softballs.

I hate interviewers. They suck at asking questions. They need to be straight forward and ask questions like, "Are you aware that no one likes the idea of Friend Codes and that there is an out cry for this system to end?" Why can't they ask a question like that to understand Nintendo's incompetence towards the terrible friend code fiasco?

because they aren't journalists. they are part of the advertising machine. they live and die by the advertising revenue paid by the same companies they cover as well as the access to these same companies. Unless all gaming "journalists" (quotes cause they ain't) collectively found their balls, then nothing will change because they'll just blacklist anyone who asks questions they don't like and stop giving access to sites who don't toe the line.

Not sure I like the sound of there still being friendcodes.

Another half-ass effort on the online department, great job Nintendo. Achievements will be in every other game purchased, and I still have a stupid code.

I think I'm done with you when it comes to consoles. I need my Nintendo game fixes, so my 3DS will be good for that.

I'm not investing into a console that will be outdated within 2-3 years, and still holds my damn hand when I'm online. I'm 27, leave me the fudge alone, and don't tell me how to communicate. Do you know how easy it is for me to mute someone on my 360?

I like many of this info, clarifies a lot of things.
But now I'm not sure about the friend codes. What Reggie said can be interpreted in so many ways, I don't know what to think.

Once again, here's the excerpt from the actual article...

The problem I believe people had with the Wii version, I told Fils-Aime, is that adults who owned the system felt like, hey, if I'm an adult, treat me like an adult and let me friend people I've met online without having to call a person and exchange a code or something like that. "Agreed," Fils-Aime said.

"You feel like those people will be happier?" I asked.

"Yes, they will be."

Why aren't other people asking Nintendo about the placement of the shoulder buttons on the GamePad, having no rumble in the Pro Controller, or the lack of analog triggers on both the GamePad and Pro controllers? They've got the clickable buttons down.

that's the final nail in the coffin. I now flat out refuse to buy a wii u, unless it's used. I do not give two sh*ts about how improved friendcodes are, they are still friendcodes and I refuse to support the Wii U, I can only hope that the wii u fails so badly that nintendo become a third party developer. Cos really all they have going for them are their first party ips, their consoles suck and miss out on multiplatform titles due to stupid sh*t like this, their online is a total fucking joke and there simply is no good reason to play on a nintendo system as opposed to a ps3/360 unless you're playing a nintendo game. Yeah we get third party exclusives every now and then like epic mickey, whooptido, I'm more than capable of living without those.

fuck you reggie, fuck you iwata and just fuck all of nintendo.
