I actually think I sort of agree with patcher this time around, somewhat. I would say littering all over your game with advertisements is a last ditch effort though because with games like TF2 around, you are only asking for a quick death.

i tried a few free to play games including tf2 and i was surprised at how difficult the whole thing is . Installation wise i mean . I suppose if i was really into those games i would change things , but at the end of the day it's just another fps .
I thought that being f2p would mean trying to reach the maximum number of users , but it doesn't seem to be the case .
It's strange that the binary domain demo gives better result than most , since japanese developers are supposedly way behind in technology . I suppose sf4 showed the same disparity between developers .
So those f2p are mostly made for power users , not ridiculously high systems but still a good step from the just not casual user . So I am wondering , those users can also buy most games for 5-20bucks a few months after release , why would they spent so much on (high caliber) f2p titles .

I blame the hats.

Because TF2 and other similar games have made themselves out to be a "home base" game with no sign of ending support and you always spend the most on your home. You can see your purchases years after launch, join a server and there are still thousands upon thousands of players still there to justify your purchase. Of course you can enjoy the hell out of a 5-20 dollar purchase years after launch, but it probably won't be "alive" and it probably won't be your "home" game.
