RUMOR - Sony starting media campaign to confuse potential Wii U customers, steer them towards PS4/Vita

I just want to point out that I'm sharing this because it comes from Tilmen, someone that I've worked with and shared content from for years now. We hear chatter like this from time to time from random sources, but I happen to trust Tilmen a bit more due to our relationship. With all that said, please make sure that you understand that this is still 100% in the realm of rumor until confirmed by Sony.

Actually, IF this is true, it makes me think Sony has Mr. Fils-Aime and Mr. Moffitt on their contract as well. It would at least explain why NOA's marketing/advertising of the Wii U has been so horrendous these last 11 months...

You're kidding, right? PS4 has already outsold WiiU on preorders alone.....

Seriously though, if pre-orders are a consideration, PS4 is poised to mop the floor with WiiU right out the gate. Tons of reason for this including better/more diverse software, comperable price, and not rehashing last gen tech. I don't see Sony wasting much money on a smear campaign like this because, if nothing else, they don't need to. Nobody outside the Nintendo fanbase takes WiiU seriously. and Nintendo seems to have no desire to fix things. Paying to trip up Nintendo consumers is just wasting money.

This really doesn't sound like Sony either way. Microsoft, totally. I mean Sony doing something like this wouldn't be a massive shock, but it would be surprising.

And did we miss the part where this is in Germany? Germany, like most countries, don't have the broken and archaic laws towards advertisement, IP, and business competition that the USA does. I can't see this flying over there at all.

i think it's funny that some people believe that everyone and their mother's gonna buy a PS4. the same friggin' thing is gonna happen as with the WiiU. The hardcore fans will buy it day one and it will slow down exponentially due to the normal consumer seeing no real reason to upgrade just because of a prettier picture. No backwards capability and the fact that everyone is still making games for the PS3 gives a lot of people NO REASON to even get a PS4 yet... Why buy a PS4 now when i can still play all the new games coming out on the PS3 and i can't play my PS3 games on the PS4...

No BC is very damning for PS4 for sure, and I'm personally not buying one because I am pissed that PS+ bhas become mandatory. But let's not compare this to the WiiU's launch; PS4 actually has more DECENT games scheduled at launch than WiiU has now. Even ports like Battlefield/Assassins Creed/Injustice are getting boosts in graphical power, which is more than WiiU can say (with most WiiU ports inferior to PS360 versions, suffering from cut content or framerate issues). For these games, it's pretty apparent that WiiU/PS3 are getting the ports, with the PS4/XB1 getting the games as they were intended.

And they aren't supporting the PS3 anymore. They can lie through their teeth and swear up and down that they are, but if history is any indication, PS3 will be as dead as Wii is now by this time next year. Just because they'll keep making the console and "Greatest Hits" doesn't mean PS3 will be supported. Unless WiiU gets watered down ports of 3rd party games that are then brought to PS3, the same way PS2 got watered down ports meant for Wii, I don't think PS3 will have anything worth buying for anybody after this season.

@BlueRangerVegeta

Bullshit.

There's no way that the PS4 can sell 6 million in preorder numbers.

jesus christ, do I need to bold/italicize/underline the "SERIOUSLY THOUGH" part of my quote?

Will PS4 outsell WiiU over the next year or so? I'd bet the farm on it, and then some. Will it do it at launch? No, I never SERIOUSLY said it would, production obviously makes that impossible even if it were realistic.

Thing is, the PS3 had roughly the same kind of pre-order numbers despite its higher price tag and mediocre lineup. To me it seems like people who brag about the PS4 or buy into its theoretical immediate dominance are those who are uneducated about the history of gaming in general. The PS4 also doesn't have unique multimedia selling points like its predecessors did; the PS1 had its CDs, the PS2 was a cheap DVD player, and even the PS3 had its Blu-ray reader (though Blu-ray didn't catch on anywhere near as quickly as DVD). I can't see it being anything other than a typical launch then followed by a typical first year. It's going to be HILARIOUS when people wonder how things could turn out that way.

Again, this is more than likely fake. Wii U isn't exactly a big competitor for PS4, as sales have been very low even with the rise due to Wind Waker HD.

Sony also has been trying very hard to clean up their image. Doing this would make them look bad, which is something they generally try to avoid these days. At most they'll mock Microsoft for doing something incredibly stupid.

exactly my point. It'll be a big boom at first then fizzle out when people realize they're buying a new machine just for "purdier graffix" (at the beginning). Let's wait a couple years before people start declaring the PS4 the "winner". hell it isn't even out yet, i can put my fanboy glasses on too and say "this holiday WiiU is gonna sell a crapload due to just mario, zelda, wii fit, wiipartyu, batman, cod, ac4"

Meh I doubt it. Why sabotage the Wii U of all things? Nintendo is doing a fine enough job on their own. Sabotage Microsoft who also just happened to sabotage themselves.
User avatar
15 Oct 2013 19:41

I don't even see why they need to sabotage the Wii U, the PS4 is gonna sell like hot cakes anyways. If this is true, I've lost a little respect for Sony. But I kinda doubt they wanna sabotage a console that isn't much of a threat to it as of now.
User avatar
15 Oct 2013 19:59

If true, Sony is wasting their money since the majority of people that sell videogames to people at any store are either ignorant to videogames in general and are already confused about the system, or they are Sony/MS shills. Even the MS shills will sell you a Playstation before a Nintendo. It's extremely rare you ever find anyone that knows anything about Nintendo, let alone someone that's actually excited for Nintendo. Sony should be doing this towards XBo.

Example: their bashing of the XB1. By your example they should have left it alone, but they chose to mock Microsoft anyway despite the fact that they had quite a bit of favor from gamers. Sony is probably one of the pettiest companies when it comes down to it.

@Jet Pilot Heh, so you don't mind them pulling something that's under handed and potentially illegal? For shame...

But seriously, if this rumor was true, this would be a new low for Sony. It'll also show how desperate they are, which is quite pathetic really.

I wish. Nintendo seemed to give a damn in the early 90s. After Sony kicked its butt a couple times they seem to have settled for secondary console.

Well... If true, this would be free marketing for Nintendo in the end. Still many people who think the WIi U is an add-on for the Wii. If Sony says it IS so they would be lying and get into trouble.

But then again the entire "thsi is how you lend a game to a friend" thing from Sony at E3 was a punch in the groin at MS (even though I truly did laugh at it, I admit). And PR is PR after all. It could be true, but they have to play this nicely if so or they could get into trouble.

If Nintendo can't advertise their system, but their games (and rant about the HD, gamepad and all) AND Sony gives them some free PR this could even turn out positive for the big N.

It's an optimistic idea, I know, but it has some logic to it! ;)

exactly! I still hear from parents and sometimes kids/teenagers that think the Wii U is basically a remake of the Nintendo Wii which doesn't surprise me since tons of people are still confused by the Wii U

Plus, this whole Sony campaign confusing thing has been around since the PS1 was launched, it's nothing new.

Yup. Good ol' Sony.

This is illegal though. Fair economic competition is actually a juridic guarantee.

If this is real, Tilmen's contact should provide evidence. This is quite serious.

I thought this was kind of obvious. I'm used to uninformed employees, but even stores that are usually good seem to have no idea about the Wii U now. Fishy.

I dont get why some seem suprised or dont even believe this are true. I thought Sonys dirty/psychopathic bussiness tactics was common knowledge. I were around when they launced the Playstation 1 and 2 guys and watched their strategy. Lying about specs, paying stores to misinform about their products (positively) and the competitors (negatively). Putting the playstation at the front of the shops, paying off thirdpartties to drop support for Nintendo and Sega etc. Paying off the gaming media to profile Playstation and neglect the other systems. And many more moves i dont care to mention.

I knew this. The astroturfing has been at so high gears, that it even smells bad now. Its nothing new for Sony though, as forging its competitors wiki pages, and creating fictitious writers for praising Sony products show.
