Aonuma planned Zelda Wii U announcement for Comic-Con, scrapped due to lack of time

Reader Eadin91 emailed in to tell me that the video below supposedly states that Aonuma was going to share something related to Zelda Wii U at Comic-Con, but had to scrap that idea due to not having time to prepare it. Apparently, Aonuma will be making that announcement in the near future.

The problem is, we need someone who understands German to get an official translation! The other problem is, the video seems slow to play and it's an hour long! If you feel that you can tackle this task, feel free to hit me up via email.

"To tell you the truth, I was planning to prepare something for my visits in New York and Germany that I could share with the fans. But I was so busy with preparations concerning the "A Link Between Worlds" presentation, that I'm sitting here today, with empty hands. But you can be happy about future announcements. Once I'm back in my office, I'll get to work so that I'll have something to announce"

UPDATE - We have not one, not two, but three translations from fans! These come from Cassiel, MrSarnisch and Fuffelpups.

Q.: Are you already preparing an anouncement for next E3? Maybe a Zelda for Wii U, how about that?

Eiji Aonuma: On the occasion of my visits in New York and Germany I actually wanted to prepare something for the fans I could present. But I was too busy preparing the presentation of A Link Between Worlds that I am now empty-handed. But be excited about future Announcements. As soon as I'm back in my office I'll start working so that I really got something to announce.

So my final question, are you already preparing a new announcement for the next E3, in 2014? Maybe a Zelda for the Wii U? How about this?

Actually I wanted to prepare something for my visits in Germany and New York, that I can announce. But I was so busy preparing my presentation of A Link between Worlds, that I can't show you anything "new" today. But you can enjoy my next announcement. As soon as I am back at my office I will start preparing something new that I can show.

Fufflepups even did a full, rough translation in our comment section, so check that ou!

It's hard to believe that he planned to announce it now, but rescheduled it 8 months from now.

Didn't Nintendo say they were thinking of revealing it at e3 but it wasn't ready? So I could see it...don't think Comic con is a big enough event to show case one of Nintendo's biggest titles though

We might have another Direct in the next few months where at least we can get a teaser, and then E3 for the full reveal.

I tried my best, here is a rough translation what they talked about. He only said he will work on it as soon as possible but not how far away we are from a new announcement...

Who had the idear to A Link between worlds, was it you, Mr. Miyamoto or somebody else?

The development started with the idear, that link can merge as a painting with the wall. With that feature in stone, we needed to find a direction for the game. There were long discussions about it and then I remembered Miyamoto saying, that he would like to make an A Link to the Past game in 3D. So we put this two idears together.

So A Link between Worlds is the sequel to A Link to the Past, do you fear expectation everyone has from the sequel to a game that many call the best 2D title in the series?

It will be difficult to surpass it's predecessor but A Link between Worlds is a complete new game, so we believe that we made something that fans and newcomer will enjoy a lot.

What was your inspiration for the game?

The inspiration came from the boss fight against Ganon in Ocarina of time, where Ganon hides himself in four paintings, we thought it would be interesting if Link can
possess this ability.

Last week you released a new Trailer for A Link between World and introduced the Kingdom of Lowrule, can you say anything about that and how it is connected to Hyrule?

Link has first to discover Lowrule and then he can travel between these two worlds. In Lowrule he meets princess Hilda, later in the game he will find out that there is a connection between princess Zelda of Hyrule and princess Hilda of Lowrule.

Last week you talked about a possible Masjora's Mask remake, because many people would love to see it happen. Do you get annoyed by this kind of questions you always get asked?

No, because we know the people love the games but now we talk about A Link between Worlds, I can't always talk about Masjora's Mask. But I’m never annoyed when somebody asks me anything related to the Legend of Zelda Franchise.

Mario and Pokémon are loved around the world equaly but The Legend of Zelda has more fans in the western part of the world. Have you any idear why that is the case?

I don't really know why but I thought about it many times. The Legend of Zelda series is well known in Japan but the number of people who actually played it is lower than in the west. Maybe more casual player think it is a game more for the core player, we have no clue but we hope to close the gap with a Link between worlds and that everybody enjoys the new game.

Two of my coworkers would like to see a The Legend of Zelda game with elements of Dark Souls, what do you think about this idear? They think Zelda should focus only on the hard core players but I think it should have a balance between casual and core, younger and elder players.

We know what kind of game hard core players are enjoying and appreciate that. But we also want that new players can enjoy the game. It is hard to find the right balance for both kind of players. One idear for players who seek a greater challenge was the Hero Mode in The Wind Waker HD, we know it is not that what they really want but we hope it is a good compromise for everybody. We hope through the implementation of such features to get people excited about the game who already know Zelda games and also new players who never played any of the games.

Does A Link between Worlds have a Hero Mode?

No, it won't be the same as in The Wind Waker HD but if you beat the game, there will be a second more challenging difficulty.

So my final question, are you already preparing a new announcement for the next E3, in 2014? Maybe a Zelda for the Wii U? How about this?

Actually I wanted to prepare something for my visits in Germany and New York, that I can announce. Meh, it can wait. We're only now ending the first year since Wii U's release and Zelda 3DS is already around the corner. I'm fine with a new Wii U Zelda not being announced until late 2014, maybe even 2015.

@The_King_Up_North This.

I feel the only reason it keeps getting brought up lately is because people won't stop asking about it.

Comic Con definitely isn't relevant enough [to Gaming] to garner such a reveal either.

Man, I wish people would relax about Zelda Wii U. Zelda games seem to be the most hyped of all Nintendo releases - before anything's really been shown of them either.

You can tell they feel preassured to have something to show, and honetly I'd rather they wait until it's nearly ready to release. Showing that one piece of Skyward Sword concept art as a 'reveal' was fairly underwhelming - especially as it didn't end up looking much like the game, and perhaps implied a heavier emphasis on the swordless gameplay than there actually was. It'd be disappointing if they did the same thing again.

I'm mostly echoing what a lot of others are saying here, but the Zelda Wii U reveal should take its time... or at least, take a break for now. The team can work out the kinks as best as they can, and hopefully put together a cohesive enough package that is really worth showing off. I doubt Wii Us would explode off shelves if the reveal was tomorrow, promising a far-off release, unless perhaps it was mindbogglingly revolutionary and borderline inconceivable.

Man, mindbogglingly is fun to type.

One sentence summary: When it's ready to be brought out, bring it out.

I have a couple of friends who don't own a Wii U who regularly ask when the new Zelda is coming out. Gaming isn't a big priority to them but they love it.

Now is not the time to announce Zelda Wii U. We've Wind Waker HD launched and ALBW in a few weeks. You don't want over saturation on Zelda, like what has happened in the past with multiple Mario games launching and being announced in such a short time. It dilutes the interest.

Zelda Wii U should really not be heard of until E3 2014.

I would love the next Zelda be of a grand scale similar to Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones.
Picture a scene similar to the Battle of Pelennor Fields that took place in front of Minas Tirith in LOTR.
Ganondorfs forces marching towards Hyrule Castle for the penultimate battle.
You've spent the game gathering all forces you can under one banner.
Zora's, Gorons, Hylians, Kakarikians, Gerudo, Deku join forces and pool their collective armies and resources for one epic battle against Ganondorf.

@OmicronTurtle

Hell no. Zelda is a lot of things but it is not the LOTR clone some people want it to be.

It's its own thing. It doesn't need to try to be something else that wouldn't even feel like Zelda in the end. Even TP, which was the most dark fantasy of all the Zelda games, still felt like Zelda more than anything else. The LOTR-style reveal that it had only led people who wanted a LOTR Zelda to be disapointed in the end.

I honestly don't think Nintendo could do the sort of game you're expecting even if they wanted to. And I don't think they want to anyway.

I do believe we're going to hear something not insubstantial before E3. Eight months without ANYthing Zelda Wii-U related is just a bit TOO long in my opinion. Aonumasan has referenced it too many times recently for there not to be something coming down the pipeline before too too long.

There could be a big Direct coming in January, as was the case the last January Direct that could again, be introducing things coming up later in 2014 not least of which is the Monolith title of which we've heard pretty much nada.

New stuff's coming, no doubt about that.

I had a very sneaky suspicion that Comic-Con was gunna be the place to announce something for the game. To hear that it was planned yet scrapped is a bummer but nice at the same time. That way, it can have it's own debut without being overshadowed by anything.

Maybe we will see a Nintendo Direct the Monday prior to the PS4 Launch and then they will pull out the big guns. No, not really. (^_^)

All this talk about Zelda makes me think we won't have to wait nearly as long as we had to for Skyward Sword.

There's no real problem with Zelda game saturation, simply because any Wii U one is still a few years away from being released about now. So if they announce it soon, then it's more a 'this game is coming in 2015' thing than 'hey look, another Zelda for the 2013 holiday season!'

A teaser is enough to get hype at least. I would love to see what art style they are contemplating anyway. Maybe ONE screen! Just one screen at the end of an ND!
