GN Version 5.0

Masahiro Sakurai is known for jam-packing his games with tons of features. There's all sorts of content in his games, some of which many people will never see. Still, there are some elements in his games that people will complain about. Sakurai isn't really a fan of this thinking.

In a Famitsu feature, Sakurai discusses reviewers and gamers that complain about extra features in games that they don't like. He's specifically referring to extra content and bonus features, rather than the meat of the game. He uses Fire Emblem Fates as an example, pointing to the system that lets you 'pet' characters in game to raise affinity levels. While Sakurai chuckled at the idea himself, he didn't see it as a detractor from the overall experience. With that said, he doesn't get it when people say an element like this detracts from the overall game itself. Yes the feature is part of the game, but it's a side-element and not part of the main experience.

Sakurai goes on to say that he just doesn't understand how people can take elements like that and say they bring the entire experience down. He also says that gamers don't understand how features like this work. They're meant to add variety to the experience and give everyone something to enjoy. He feels this variety is very important and makes games more inclusive for all types of gamers. Without that kind of extra content and little touches, he feels experiences might become stale.
