Balatro was primarily inspired by Cantonese card game Big Two
I can't wait for the sequel, Big Three
When Western gamers see the roguelike hit Balatro, the first card game that likely comes to their minds is poker. As it turns out, poker wasn’t the primary inspiration behind the title. According to designer LocalThunk, that honor goes to a lesser known Cantonese card game called Big Two.
Big Two is a gambling game in which players are trying to get rid of all their cards (similar to Crazy Eights, or Uno). In the premiere episode of a podcast called Dear Dwyery, LocalThunk delves into the history of Balatro, including its origins and influences. According to him, the game was given poker-like aesthetics to make it more palatable to players unfamiliar with Big Two.
“I think there’s a contingent of people more willing to interface with a game if it’s talking about blinds, discards, and all these words. It was like an onboarding tool, a coat of paint to make this seem approachable for a particular audience.”
LocalThunk also notes that Big Two “thematically doesn’t have a lot going on,” which explains why poker was a better fit for a video game. In any case, it seems like he made the right call, as the game has proven to be a big hit since its release.

Switch version of Tsukihime: A Piece of Blue Glass Moon will include unmodified art book
The PS4 version has "graphic modifications"
Tsukihime: A Piece of Blue Glass Moon is a visual novel that’s getting a Western release on June 27, 2024. There will also be a special limited edition physical version that comes with an art book. Today, the game’s developer made an announcement on Twitter that the art book that comes with the PS4 version of the game will have some modifications made to it, while the Switch version will not.
Exactly what those modifications entail, we don’t know, but it apparently applies to only two pages of the book. These modifications are “due to differing platform publishing policies”. In other words, it sounds like there’s some risque or otherwise objectionable content that Sony felt the need to alter in some way. (These alterations apply only to the art book apparently, as the game will be the same version on either platform.)
If you’re a purist who’s after the unmodified version of this art book, then the Switch version is your only way to get it without importing. Once the game is released, comparisons between the two versions will no doubt crop up online for those who are curious about the differences. Below, check out the developer’s official announcement.

Embark on this definitive version of the critically acclaimed Shin Megami Tensei V, massively expanded with a brand-new storyline featuring new locations, demons, and choices to make that will dictate the fate of all existence.
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance consists of two complete story paths: experience a brand-new route, the “Canon of Vengeance” - a dramatic tale of revenge by the fallen, centered around new characters and an enigmatic cohort of demons, the Qadištu, who plot their own dark designs apart from the war of those who fight to maintain order and those who seek to defy it. Or explore the original story told in Shin Megami Tensei V, the “Canon of Creation” - an eternal conflict between angels and demons, in which the protagonist fights for the world’s fate.
When a grisly murder scene in modern-day Tokyo blocks our protagonist’s walk home, an unplanned detour leaves him buried and unconscious. He awakens in a new Tokyo, a wasteland ravaged by apocalypse now called Da’at… but before bloodthirsty demons can claim his life, a savior emerges, and the two of them unite to become a mighty being, neither human nor demon: a Nahobino.
With newfound power, the protagonist ventures through Da’at, an enigmatic realm filled with mythical deities and demonic tyrants in constant conflict for survival. Searching for answers, the protagonist must forge his own path in a battle between angels and demons to dictate the fate of the world.
Zelda movie director says he'll "be ambitious" and "keep the money on the screen"
He might need the Giant's Wallet
A live action Legend of Zelda movie is officially in the works, with the project being helmed by director Wes Ball. Before that movie gets rolling however, Ball still has to promote his upcoming film Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. That’s why he took part in a Reddit AMA this week.
Now, Ball insisted that he couldn’t say anything about the Legend of Zelda movie just yet, but that didn’t stop some Redditors from trying. Predictably, nothing major was revealed here, but Ball did share some of his thoughts and feelings about the project.
Below, check out the highlights of Zelda-adjacent questions from Reddit users along with Ball’s replies:
bz667: How the legend of zelda movie is going?
Ball: I know I’m gonna get a ton of Zelda questions. Sorry to disappoint, but I can’t say anything about it for now… Just that I love Zelda and I’ll work my ass off to make something great for us.
Zfancyman14: What lessons learned from Apes will you carry with you to Zelda?
Ball: Keep the money on the screen. Be ambitious. Be confident in the talent around you. Try to do something great.
AgentSkidMarks: Has your work on Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes given you any experience or inspiration that you think will help you with the upcoming Zelda movie?
Ball: Of course. You learn stuff on every movie you make. I learned a TON on this film.
Fine_Land_1974: If the film does well, are there plans in place to extend the series?
Ball: Yes. We’d love to continue with the story and characters.
OnePassenger4597: Will john cena play navi in the zelda movie?
Ball: You never know.
Okay, so that last comment was most likely tongue in cheek, but stranger things have happened… Ball also refused to comment on which Zelda games were his favorite, seemingly in an effort to avoid giving away which games the upcoming film might take inspiration from.
Click here to read through the full AMA for yourself, and see if there are any other details you can glean about Ball’s filmmaking style, or what he might be bringing to the Zelda movie.

Pokémon Sleep 'Fire Type Week' event announced
Hot side of the pillow
Pokémon Sleep has announced their latest upcoming event, which is Fire Type Week. During this week in May, you’ll be more likely to encounter Fire Type Pokémon, along with a few other bonuses. See below for all the info.
The Fire Type Week event lasts from 4:00 a.m. on Monday, May 6, to 3:59 a.m. on Monday, May 13 in all areas! If you’d like to prepare for the Entei Research event—during which Fire-type Pokémon will be particularly helpful—we encourage you to befriend lots of Fire-type Pokémon! During this event, you’ll be able to meet Pokémon of various sleep types regardless of your own. In particular, Fire-type Pokémon will be more likely to appear. Also during this event, you’ll be able to use the Mini Candy Boost function, which doubles the effect of Pokémon Candies. It’s a great opportunity to raise your Fire-type Pokémon!
In addition, one of the Pokémon that visits during sleep research will for sure arrive hungry! Note: This applies to only one sleep session per day. This effect applies separately from the hungry effects of Friend Incense and Good Camp Tickets. Example: If you use a Good Camp Ticket and Friend Incense together during the event, at least three Pokémon that appear during sleep research will for sure be hungry. On top of all that, you can get great rewards—like Vulpix Incense—through limited-time missions during the event. We hope you’re looking forward to this!
The following Pokémon are more likely to appear: Charmander, Charmeleon, Charizard, Vulpix, Ninetales, Growlithe, Arcanine, Flareon, Cyndaquil, Quilava, Typhlosion.
Lando Calrissian, Chewbacca, and more headed to Fortnite in May 3rd update
Whrrahhrhwurrgghhhawrrgaghhhrrr!
We’re about a week away from Fortnite’s big Star Wars themed update on May 3rd, 2024. Of course, this update will be coming a day early in order to properly celebrate ‘May the 4th’ later that weekend. This week, we got our first confirmations of some of the goodies coming to the game on that day.
First, the official Fortnite Festival account revealed that the debonair Lando Calrissian will be available as a skin in Fortnite’s rhythm mode. Just a couple days earlier, the LEGO Fortnite account also revealed that a LEGO version of the Wookiee Chewbacca would be joining in on the fun. Since skins tend to be shared across all modes in Fortnite, this means that Lando and Chewie are most likely confirmed for all other Fortnite modes as well.
In addition, dataminers have apparently uncovered a few other items that are likely to be added to the game with this update: a Death Trooper skin, a new Leia Organa skin, lightsabers, and the Wookiee Bowcaster as a Mythic item.
Stay tuned, as we wait for Fortnite to officially unveil everything they’ll have on offer for the big May 3rd update. If you’re a big Star Wars fan, there’s sure to be a lot in store for you!
