Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome amiibo - Nintendo provides fix for error message

UPDATE - Nintendo says this issue is cropping up for players with save data that contained items that you normally cannot obtain during regular gameplay. Also, the method of 'fixing' the game below simply has you starting from scratch, so continue with extreme caution!

Are you experiencing an error message after updating your New Leaf copy with the Welcome amiibo content? It's not clear if Nintendo is working on a patch, but they do have a solution to get around the error. All you have to do is press the home screen icon, then when the 3DS logo appears, hold “A”, “B”, “X”, “Y” and follow the instructions.
