NPD - Switch the biggest launch for Nintendo hardware ever, second-biggest for the industry since 1995

Coming from NPD analyst Sam Naji...

"March 2017 will go down in history books as the month Nintendo broke records. The Nintendo Switch had the biggest hardware launch for a Nintendo platform and the second biggest launch for any video game platform since 1995, the time NPD began tracking this category.

In this debut month (month 1), the Nintendo Switch sold 31K more units than previous best-selling Nintendo month-1 platform, the Game Boy Advanced, which released back in June 2001. The two Nintendo Switch SKUs, the 32GB Gray Joy-Con, followed by the 32GB Neon Red/Blue Joy-Con, were the best-selling systems for the month."

- total Zelda franchise sales from 1995 to the present comes in at $1.4 billion
- Zelda is the top-selling property of all time within the Adventure super genre, selling 54 percent more revenue than the next best-selling franchise, Resident Evil

"Game Boy Advanced"
Why do people add a d on the end?

Because that console is in the past.

Or because its a typo.

Some people DO pronounce the "d" though. So it's not always a typo. Some people just reflexively add the "d" becaus they feel it should be Advanced, and not Advance.
... But anyway, mine was just a bad joke.

Hopefully they keep the momentum up. I will get a switch sometime this year or next when xenoblade 2 comes. I am already playing zelda on Wii U so I can hold out for the system.

Will be interesting to see what MK8 does for the system this month.

Hopefully The Pokemon Company announces Stars next month as well.

Yeah, that's what actually marketing the system will do.

I want a switch so badly!!!!!

Me too! I can't wait to get it from next year once Super Mario Odyssey shows up!

I'm shocked to see that Zelda is top revenue here... Isn't Mario suppose to be the highest?!?!

Mario probably just isn't classified as an adventure game series. Not sure why but that's probably the case

The NDP analyst states "Zelda is the top-selling property of all time within the Adventure super genre". So the NDP probably don't classify Mario series games under Adventure.
There is no question that Mario Bros as a brand has brought in more total revenue than Zelda.

I don't have sales figures but I would speculate Mario has the highest lifetime revenue across all brands in video games period, especially if one factors in things like Mario Kart, Mario sports titles, RPG/Paper Mario etc.

And what system had the biggest launch numbers ever?

The article says "...since 1995" so it must've been the original PlayStation. I remember the marketing blitz for that console and how it was so damn hard to find around the holiday season.

Interesting if it was indeed the original PlayStation and not maybe the PlayStation 2.

Pretty sure the year is just because NPD started compiling numbers that year... Hum...
[FALSE EDIT] I looked it up, and it's the PS4, with 1,140,000 sold the first month by NPD numbers.

Biggest months for hardware was December 2008, 3,810,000 Wii sold and December 2002, 2,733,000 PS2 sold. Largest non-holyday non-launch month was October 2008, where 803,000 Wii were sold.
Biggest November was the 2008 one with 2,040,000... Yep... Wii. (So in 2008, in two months in US, Wii sold almost 5 million consoles... That's CRAZY.)
