Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai has shared the latest video in his game design series on YouTube. The video explores on Sakurai’s approach to development difficulties.

Sakurai explains that game development isn’t an easy process, and it’s understandable that some sacrifices must be made to any game to get it in players’ hands. Developers can’t always do exactly what they want to do, but compromise must be found to bring enjoyment to the players. Taking the easiest solution won’t always accomplish that goal.

He goes on to explain that most players often aren’t concerned about why a developer makes a choice, but are instead focused on how those choices are made. An element of your game may not be technologically feasible, but whatever replaces that element should aim to satisfy players just as much.

The video’s main thesis is that developers should always remember their focus on the players, even if that means taking on difficult tasks to improve their experience. Sakurai pushes developers and programmers to create games they themselves enjoy.
