November 1992

Nintendo developed and published this GameBoy sequel featuring its most popular character. This instalment may be best remembered as the first appearance of the hero’s rival/bizarro doppelganger. He didn’t have his trademark garlic and farting yet, but the improved sprites and graphics of this title over the predecessor showed his portly magnificence. This game also featured a magic carrot power-up that gave the hero the ability to jump higher and float back down slowly using his new-found bunny ears.

It’s still debated today whether this Rare-developed racer or Mario Kart 64 is the best kart racing game on the N64. A prehensile-tailed Nintendo sidekick is featured, while the rest of the roster is a hodgepodge of characters with as many future icons as forgotten footnotes. For every Conker and Banjo, there’s a Tiptup and Bumper. Help this…interesting cast win races in the air, land, and sea and thwart WizPig’s attempt at conquering Timber’s Island.

Nintendo released the fourth game in its intergalactic bounty hunting series, this time on the Game Boy Advance. This title was a direct follow-up to the extremely popular and well regarded SNES game from the same series but was slightly more linear and story focused. Watch out for the SA-X which mimics the main character and is constantly hunting her down.

November 2002 was a great month for fans of the above franchise since Nintendo also released the first 3D game in that same series on GameCube. Many fans were worried about how the gameplay would transition to the third dimension, but Retro Studios knocked it out of the park – after plenty of internal strife that threatened to derail the project. The game was a triumphant success for Nintendo and is considered one of the best games of all time. Hopefully you like scanning things!

After spending time on the beach in the previous game, Nintendo’s mascot put his sleeves back on and blasted off to space in this Wii title. Use the Wii Remote pointer to collect star bits which can be used to stun enemies or feed Hungry Lumas. The game was freakin’ fantastic and featured a stellar soundtrack. I would be remiss to not mention the debuting character who has gone on to become a fan favorite. Before Lady Dimtrescu, there was “Dommy Mommy” Rosalina for all you sickos.

Nintendo packaged this spinoff title with the Wii Zapper, one of the many plastic peripherals for the Wii to take up space in your house. The game starred the green-clad, pointy-eared, man-child from Nintendo’s cast of characters and re-used assets from the cross-generation GameCube and Wii title that released a year prior. It was the first game to use the Wii Zapper and showed both the limitations and potential of the accessory. Many reviewers thought that the game was fun while it lasted…which was only about an hour.

At the launch of the Wii U, THQ showed up with this sequel developed by Vigil Games that starred Death, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Interestingly, the first game in the series had not been released on a Nintendo system up to that point. While that first game was very much a Zelda-style adventure game, this successor played more like a mix of God of War and Prince of Persia. It’s a hack-and-slash title with some open world exploration and dungeons. Fun fact: composer Jesper Kyd also provided music for the Hitman and Assassin’s Creed series.

Give Ubisoft credit as they were one of the few companies at the Wii U launch to provide a unique experience that used the Wii U GamePad in a meaningful way with this first-person survival horror game. Use various weapons to fight – and hopefully escape from – the undead in London. If they catch and kill you, that character is permanently dead, and you start out as another survivor. Kill that original character to reclaim your inventory. The name of the game is still really dumb, though.

This id Software reboot hit the Switch in 2017, but it’s more generally known by the year it was released (2016) since it has the same name as the original game. The wizards at Panic Button brough this “impossible port” to the Switch. Battle demonic forces from Hell on Mars as the “Slayer” in this first-person shooter. Sounds pretty cool right? Oh, Hell yeah! And the soundtrack goes HARD.

Nearly six years after it’s original release, Nintendo got this Bethesda classic. As the fifth installment in the series, take control of the “Dragonborn” and set foot in one of the most expansive open worlds in video game history. This game was shown in the initial reveal trailer for the Nintendo Switch but was not initially confirmed for release. This game is significant since it was the first Bethesda game to be released on a Nintendo platform since Home Alone for the NES in 1991. (Yes, I will always work in a Home Alone reference whenever possible.) The Switch version featured motion controls and Amiibo support with some Zelda equipment. “Fus Ro Dah!”

When not waxing poetic about Nintendo you can probably find him in the professional wrestling ring as "Weapon Next" Logan Lynch, working out, or enjoying the Wisconsin outdoors. He's a kid trapped in an adult's body. You may have to grow older, but you don't have to grow up!

Congrats to the writer, it's really hard to write these and aim for the proper difficulty. I tried writing stuff like that for games in conventions and stuff but sometimes underestimated how much culture and knowledge seemed common for my generation simply because we were there when stuff happened. For younger gamers though, the trivia or general knowledge was really just not yet acquired or even simply harder to come by.

Also I've got all of those references of course! And I have one thing to say : I'll be defending that ubisoft wii u game to the death even though nobody likes it.

What a fun list. The Ubisoft game is one I periodically forget about completely. I had a fun time with it when it came out, maybe I'll revisit it and see if my opinion has changed.
