Overwatch 2’s Season 3 is scheduled to begin next Tuesday, February 7th, 2023, and one of its biggest additions to the game is a brand new map. That map is Antarctic Peninsula, and it sounds like it’s going to combine both new and familiar elements to keep players on their toes. Here are a few new details we’ve gleaned about Antarctic Peninsula thanks to a recent Polygon interview.

  • The first new “control” style map in Overwatch 2
  • Designed specifically to accommodate play between two teams of five
  • Features three main locations: an icebreaker ship, underground tunnels, and a giant drill
  • Contains references to Mei’s past as well as foreshadowing for future story events
  • Penguins will feature throughout the map, and though they can be shot at, they can’t be killed.

Level designer Trey Spisak also highlighted what this map is bringing to the table that previous control maps didn’t:

Spisak said that there’s a “narrow roof” above the ship’s control point, “which we haven’t really messed with on a control point [before]” and a platform above the drill’s point, “an additional piece [of the map] you have to control on top the of the standard stuff you’d have to deal with while playing on a control point.”

Overwatch 2 fans will get the chance to play on the new Antarctic Peninsula and attempt to uncover its secrets when the game’s new season launches February 7, 2023.
