Nintendo has long been known as a family friendly company, and they’ve typically avoided any kind of realistic violence in any of their games. When asked about violent games in a recent Variety interview, beloved game designer and Nintendo Fellow Shigeru Miyamoto elaborated on his stance on the matter.

Here’s what he had to say:

“I want to make it clear that I am not against shooter games and violent games. There are many mediums that entertain people, but I think it is my mission to find other ways to make an interesting and fun game. I told myself that Mario is a character that never hurts other people, so I wanted to find a different way of expressing Mario.”

Certain Goombas and Koopas might disagree with the idea that Mario never hurts anybody, but the sentiment is appreciated just the same. It’s clear that Miyamoto simply isn’t interested in making video games with any resemblance to real world violence, and it doesn’t sound like that will be changing any time soon.

Why is a falling penguin baby the first thing that comes to mind reading Miyamoto's quote?

Tell that to the trolls in Super Mario Maker 2.
