The FBI turned to Nintendo and the Switch in order to locate a missing 15-year-old girl who disappeared from her home back on Aug. 3rd, 2022.
It turns out the young girl had befriended a stranger on the internet, Ethan Roberts, who eventually traveled from Arizona to her home state of Virginia to abduct her. Roberts abducted the girl to force her into child pornography.
Roberts allowed the young girl to take her Switch with her, which she used to download a game and watch YouTube content. This is when a friend saw the young girl’s name pop up on the Switch activity list, and authorities were contacted with the news instantly.
The FBI turned to Nintendo to get more information on the Switch and its internet connection, which led them right to Ethan Roberts and the kidnapped girl. The girl has since been returned to her family, safe and sound. Roberts has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison.
