Did that Blue Shell finally catch up?

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has proven to be a behemoth on Switch, with over 57 million copies sold as of now. It’s managed to consistently remain in the NPD’s Top 20 selling games each month since its debut in April 2017…until now.

According to October 2023’s sales charts, and as pointed out recently by GamesIndustry.biz, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has finally fallen out of the top 20. Heavy hitting new releases like Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder may have had something to do with it being bumped out.

Is this a sign that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is finally starting to run out of steam after dominating sales charts for so long? It’s possible, although with Black Friday right around the corner, and the final wave of DLC having just been released, it seems likely that the game’s sales will continue to be strong throughout the holiday season. It’s also worth noting that the NPD numbers do not include digital sales for Nintendo games, meaning there are a whole lot of sales not officially accounted for that would add to the total.

Still, it does seem that Mario Kart 8’s reign is slowing down slightly, if not coming to an end. It remains to be seen if Nintendo has plans for a Mario Kart 9 any time soon.
