The Pokémon Company announced Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet, new video games coming to the blockbuster series that first captivated fans with the Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green games 26 years ago. The announcement reveals new overworld visuals, player characters, and starter Pokémon.

The announcement was made during a special Pokémon Presents video presentation streamed online to fans around the world on Pokémon Day, the annual fan-focused, pop-culture holiday celebrating the launch of the original Pokémon games on February 27, 1996. Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet will launch in late 2022 and be available exclusively on the Nintendo Switch system.

“Trainers will once again embark on an epic journey of discovery and exploration,” said Tsunekazu Ishihara, president and CEO of The Pokémon Company. “Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet will be an adventure unlike any other, and I cannot wait to share this incredible experience with all of you.”

The game is further described on the official website:

Various towns blend seamlessly into the wilderness with no borders. You’ll be able to see the Pokémon of this region in the skies, in the seas, in the forests, on the streets—all over! You’ll be able to experience the true joy of the Pokémon series—battling against wild Pokémon in order to catch them—now in an open-world game that players of any age can enjoy.

This is the first generation in a long time where I can't decide which starter I like most. I'm pretty happy with all of them.

I'm in love with Quaxly aka Donald Duck.

Wasn’t it pokemon red and blue?

These games look pretty good. But feels a bit too soon after Arceus.

I love him too, but I'm also a huge cat lover and feel almost obligated to go for Sprigatito. If I'm being honest, Fuecoco might edge into the top spot for me, but my girlfriend loves crocodiles and has already chosen him. I don't want to overlap on starters, but it's tempting!

Perhaps one of the more interesting aspects of this is it drops the "Action-RPG" Genre of Legends Arceus and returns to just RPG.

I really enjoyed Legends Arceus, so I'm curious as to what they are going to keep and what they're dropping from the mix. Overworld Battles seem to be a shoe-in, but can we still throw Pokeballs without initiating battles? Do Pokemon still attack. Lots of questions right now, but I'm optimistic.

I did not see this announcement coming! I never even got around to buying Legends Arceus yet, but after seeing how this game is a combination of that and the more traditional mainline games I will probably just hold off for this game.
