Sonic Frontiers is poised to take the Sonic franchise in a bold, new direction with its vast open world and nonlinear gameplay style. Does that mean we can expect the game to last longer than previous Sonic games too? According to an IGN interview with the game’s director Morio Kishimoto, the answer to that question is a resounding yes:

With the implementation of the Open Zone, Sonic Frontiers boasts a lot more content than previous Sonic games. Kishimoto says that it should take the average player between 20 and 30 hours to finish the game, while completionists can easily spend double the time to see everything. To keep the player motivated throughout the journey, Kishimoto and his team decided to implement character progression to accompany the longer playtime.

If this estimate is accurate, then Sonic Frontiers could last you as long as 40-60 hours if you’re going for 100% completion. That’s certainly extensive for a Sonic game! As mentioned in the interview, you will be able to upgrade Sonic’s speed and other stats to help keep you occupied while you try to find everything the game has to offer. Also, in spite of that purported length, Kishimoto did mention that he thinks attempting a Sonic Frontiers speed run “might be a fun challenge”.

Will you be up for the challenge, or will you take Sonic Frontiers at a leisurely pace? You’ve got some time to think it over before the game’s release on November 8, 2022.

yeah...I'm not interested in playing a Sonic game for that long.
