Eiji Aonuma talks about what would pave the way for Zelda to take the lead role
Would that be The Legend of Link?
Zelda has been right there alongside Link since the very start of the Legend of Zelda franchise. Sometimes Zelda plays a more active role in the experience, and other times she’s simply there to rescue. Sadly, we’ve never see a Legend of Zelda title where Zelda takes the lead.
While that hasn’t happened yet, it doesn’t mean the idea is out of the question. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Nintendo’s Eiji Aonuma addressed the topic of Zelda being the protagonist in her own adventure. According to Aonuma, all it would take is the right gameplay setup.
“We feel like what takes most priority is this idea of gameplay. If it turns out that the particular gameplay we’re trying to bring to fruition would be best served by having Zelda take that role, then it’s possible that that could be a direction we could take. With that said, of course, because we are not sure what the next gameplay experience is going to be, we can’t say what Zelda’s next step is going to be.”

12M agoThere were two games where Zelda took a lead role, it was the Philips CD-I games and they sucked. Keep Zelda and Peach as damsels in distress, please.

12M agoYes why not? I think it would be awesome to play as Zelda. Spirit Tracks took at least a little step in that direction.

12M agoI mean, Captain Obvious is obvious. But don't tell Kotaku this.

12M agoIf they made a game where you played as Zelda, I'd want it to be about sorcery and magic. I don't think bluntly swapping the roles of Link and Zelda is the way to go.

12M agoSeeing as Link has the Tri-force of Courage it make sense for him to fit the role that they're using him for. A Zelda centric game would need to focus more on Wisdom so she'd be more of a mage than a close range fighter and the game should probably put more emphasis on puzzles to reflect the wisdom aspect.
