Deck13 is bringing Chained Echoes, their 16-bit SNES-style RPG to the Switch sometime in the fourth quarter of 2022. We’ve shared details and footage of Chained Echoes over the last few months, and many were quick to point out classic RPG influences. Thanks to a new interview, now we know just what games the developer was inspired by.

In an interview with Video Chums, developer Matthias Linda opened up about the many classic titles that have inspired Chained Echoes in some way. Titles you’d expect to be mentioned get name-dropped, but there’s some others you might not have guessed!

See, I grew up with games such as Xenogears and Chrono Trigger. …They are among my most beloved games of all times and I took tons of inspirations from them. But also Suikoden 2, Terranigma and Final Fantasy VI. And quite a few more for sure. While I mainly focused on that era of RPGs while shaping Chained Echoes, I obviously played more games from modern times which probably also had their influence after all. But at its core, Chained Echoes was meant to be a love letter to the games I grew up with.
