We’re very sad to report that legendary SEGA dev Rieko Kodama has passed away, as confirmed by SEGA producer Yosuke Oskunari. Kodama was 59 at her time of passing.

Kodama had an absolutely iconic career while with SEGA, working on some of SEGA’s biggest and brightest franchises over the years. Rieko was involved with Phantasy Star, 7th Dragon series, Skies of Arcadia, Altered Beast and even the original Sonic the Hedgehog. Kodama started out at SEGA as a graphic designer, but quickly moved into the role of director and then finally producer.

Our hearts go out to all those who are impacted by Kodama’s passing.

I'll never forget my time with Skies of Arcadia. Such a great title. She might not be as well-known or media friendly as say Yuji Naka, but she sure left her mark for a lot of us. RIP Kodama san.

That's an impressive CV. She's left a lasting mark on the gaming industry. It's always sad to hear someone has died, 59 is way too young. RIP.
