Masahiro Sakurai is back with another installment of his game development video series, and this time the focus is on object collision.

How many times have you played a game where you thought you could walk on a floor, yet you fall right through it? How about a portion of a stage you go to traverse, only to find out it’s actually part of the background? All of this can be avoided if you pay close attention to object collision.

In today’s video, Sakurai talks about the importance of differentiating the areas where a player can stand on solid ground, and where they can’t. This includes both background artwork and foreground elements. Simply put, don’t make the player guess where it’s safe to stand!
